IE8 'officially' becomes most-used browser in the world

While there's no shortage of alternatives in web browsing, it looks like Internet Explorer 8 still has some pull out there. Net MarketShare, a company that monitors usage and market share of major web browsers, has released their January report.
According to the report, IE (all versions) holds a solid 62.12% of all browser usage. In addition to a 27% share on Windows, it has also taken a pretty big bite out of other operating systems as well. All these numbers translate to one thing: people are still using IE8...a lot of people. Sure, part of this has to do with the fact that it's the default browser for Windows and used by many large companies but it's still a pretty big deal.
The folks at the Windows software team are humbled, having only released version 8 of IE less than a year ago. They also reported that the popular browser was responsible for blocking over 80 million malware attacks. It will be interesting to see how long the streak will last given the rising popularity of browsers such as Firefox.
ed note: StatCounter currently pegs IE8's individual share at 22.1%, just ahead of Firefox 3.5 at 21.7%

i think if you read the report again you will notice it's 62% for IE... not specifically IE8... meaning 6/7 & IE8 compatibilty mode etc clubbed together.
The browser versions show a different picture with only 22% on IE8 :

You have the wrong - 62.12% is all IE browsers - not just IE8.

What they said.
Graph-reading FAIL. :-)

IE8 is horrible. Had to edit the registry to stop the Welcome Message from popping up every few days. I would uninstall it if I could.

I've got to say Ie8 has about the most annoying first launch of any mainstream program.
The pop-up preference pane, the MSN.com thing asking me to choose US or Canada, the second tab opening to 'welcome' me....and the escape key does nothing.
And this happens every time I throw a customer's system on the bench for a reformat. Whee!

IE8 is the worst browser experience my company has ever had. We had all 11 PCs upgraded to IE8, had to downgrade them back to IE7 because everybody had issues with the browser, its very buggy and we are very heavy users of IE. Thank God we are working on moving to firefox.

I think we can see a direct correlation here between the massive Win7 sales and large market share for IE8.
Your average user buying a prebuilt PC (almost impossible to find non-Apple PC's without Win7 now) will simply use the included IE8 for their web browsing.
It would be more telling if they broke out the IE8 percentage across various OS versions. (And separate Automatic and Manual update computers). That would give a more accurate view of who has "chosen" to use IE8.

As happy as I am that users are moving away from IE6 (which still has 20% marketshare :( ) to IE8 I'm afraid it's going to be the new IE6.
If you look at IE8 it doesn't support nearly any of HTML5 and if IE6 is any indicator major companies won't move away from IE8 until they upgrade their systems again.
Even if they did as of November the IE9 beta only scored 32/100 on Acid3. I'm not sure what it's HTML5 support looks like.
Too bad we can't just get businesses to move to Firefox (or Chrome). :(

Only a few months and then the all IE users in the EU get a choice of browser :) Its going to be interesting.
