Avatara lets you create incredibly detailed 3D avatars
Some people don't like how they come out in photos. Some just like the"gamer-look", and some online media just work better with avatars (say, forums).
The problem with most online tools for creating avatars is that they produce cookie-cutter images. I mean, how many variations of South Park avatars can you have? They all end up pretty similar.
Avatara is an avatar creator which does its best to break that mold. The site lets you create a 3d avatar and customize just about any aspect of your creation. You can create a man, a woman, a child, a creature, or an "extreme" avatar. The extreme ones are basically just caricatures, some kind of grotesque.
Sometimes it feels too rich in detail. I started out trying to create something for myself, but had to give up halfway through because it was so time consuming. I admit, I did go for the "advanced" mode, which lets you control even more detail. But hey, the button says "advanced" -- how could I resist? Also, it insisted on giving me a female body even though I selected a male face, which was not good for my ego.
However, if you've got the time to spend and the inclination to create an online likeness of yourself (or of whatever it is you'd like to be), you should definitely give Avatara a whirl. Show us your results in the comments!

I started into the site but gave up when it wanted me to create an account. The whole concept *looks* neat, but I'm not sure what I get out of it for the amount of time I'd put in (which for me is not a good enough reason to go through the trouble of making a new account!)
In any event, to get a "taste" of what you can do, check the gallery: http://avatara.com/gallery/

I've completed my first avatar (in between tasks at work) I like the use your own photo feature to "clone" a face. It takes several minutes to complete and creates a very close likeness. It doesn't look like the skin matches the body skin though. However, my avatar was clothed before I used the "clone."
I haven't used it yet. Not sure if I will. Just wanted to give it a try.
