The iPad and you

The iPad, whether you like it or not, has implications for everyone. The early-adopter, the developer, and even the conscientious surfer and app downloader -- whichever one you are, the iPad's going to make an impact on your life. Apple has successfully controlled technological fads for almost a decade -- you can be damn sure that the iPad won't be any different.
So here's the news that affects you. Not your friends, nor the hot girls you try to woo with your tablet -- not even your jealous co-workers -- just you.
1. All iPhone and iPod Touch apps will work on the iPad
Good news! The iPad will run the apps currently in the App Store -- all 140,000 of them. Well, most of them. Apps that use the camera or a dedicated GPS will be out. You can also sync the apps you've already bought for your iPhone or iPod Touch with your iPad. A lot of apps in the Store are also being -- or have already been -- re-worked to utilize the iPad's larger screen. I can only assume updated versions of the apps you already own will be free to download (but we'll see...)
2. There is a new iPad SDK that will make the most of the new device
Developers start your engines! With the iPad comes a new version of the iPhone SDK, version 3.2. The SDK includes an iPad simulator, sample code, interface guidelines -- just check the site if you need more info.
This new version of the SDK reveals some key features of the iPad that programmers need to be aware of, and cater for. Functionality-wise, it seems the iPad will readily connect to an external display (handy for slide shows and presentations), and there are also API calls for file sharing -- there's a directory on the iPad that will be mountable on your PC or Mac.
And, sadly, it seems the device still only runs one app at a time. No multitasking, gentlemen. Also, there's still no Flash. Damn you, Apple.
3. Dongles and adaptors and extensions and and and...
The iPad isn't going to be cheap, that's for sure. The only connectivity you get is one frickin' socket in the bottom -- and it isn't USB. No, it's some proprietary socket that you can convert into other things... like an SD card reader... or a USB port.Apple aren't stupid. You might've let out a whoop of joy when you heard the iPad was 'only' $500, but you can be damn sure that they're going to take a second pass at your wallet if you want to do anything interesting with your iPad. I quite liked the idea of using the iPad for looking at photos on my big digital camera -- it sucks that Apple are going to milk my big, juicy tech-horny nipples for the privilege.
* * *
All in all, the iPad looks like it's going to be a consumer dream, if you can afford it. I doubt it will single-handedly eliminate eBook readers like the Nook and Kindle, but it's definitely the beginning of the end for book-reading-only devices.
There's also no forward-facing camera, and thus no Skype or video conferencing (which for many would be a wet dream). I guess we'll have to wait until the iPad 3GS before we see the camera. Please, Apple, take my money -- take my hard-earnt money, and my soul while you're at it.

Actually "earnt" is a real, correct word with the same meaning as "earned". It's just a very uncommon word. It follows the same principles as "learn" to "learnt" and "spell" to "spelt". You may have problems finding it in dictionaries, but that is because it's usage has declined severely over time. If you could find an older dictionary, it would probably be in there. Usage is from Middle English type era, and usually only seen in British English.

Oh man, how could I miss that?? You got me good. I mean, what an idiot I am not using grammar and spelling from the FREAKING MEDIEVAL TIMES. If thou see any more error in my spelling ways, wouldst thou contact me with all haste? I would be most appreciative of such a favor, wouldst you bestow it upon me. Forever I would rain down accolades upon you, and upon all your beloved ones.

You're right, it's not in the dictionary. So if it's not in the dictionary, then... well, it's not in the dictionary. What more need I say? Well played, my good man. Well played.

(Dang, by the end of this, I'll be famous for that quote. Er, quotent. Quoteth. Agh I can't spell)

Eh?
Earnt is a British spelling of 'earned' -- or rather, earnt probably came first, and earned second.
It's not a common spelling, but I prefer the sound of it.

Ah, I didn't see the further comments by Jeremy and then yourself...
Heated discussion!
There's nothing wrong with 'earnt' -- end of story.
It's not an American word, and for that I apologiZe, but it's still valid ENGLISH :)

I still hate reading book on Kindle's. Easier to trade and let people borrow books and magazines. Plus if I go camping (yes away from technology) I don't want to worry about dirt, or a light drizzle.
spill drink on a book, you're out 20 bucks., but a Kindle or Ipad?
I'll stick to Print thank you, no battery life required.

I'm no Apple fanboy, but I do see a specialised use applicable to me. As a designer, I could use this as a drawing tablet without the expense (or weight) of a tablet pc.
Weta Digital (the guys who did Gollum on Lord of the Rings) are now using the iPhone app Colors to do speed painting for concept art. I'd be interested to hear how Greg Broadmore (Weta concept artist for District 9 and a Colors user) thinks of the much bigger screen and faster A4 processor (1 ghz).
Combine this with the Pogo stylus (I don't like using my fingers): http://tenonedesign.com/stylus.php and the iPhone app developed by Autodesk, SketchBook Mobile (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/pc/item?siteID=123112&id=13872203), and you may possibly have a true digital sketchpad. Wacom Cintiqs are expensive, non-mobile and they're only monitors.
The fact that it's an LED screen with IPS also means that it (on paper at least) is a superior display to many other tablet pc displays - not to mention the lower end Cintiqs like the 12UX (which was over hyped). All of these, for a designer, have viewing angle issues, so if you shift in your seat there can be a massive colour shift. Having seen an LED with IPS in action, I can tell you it's a big step forward for designers.
Sheesh, I do sound like a fanboy! Well I'll have to see one in action for myself before passing judgement - my wallet's not going to be sucked into the 'Jobs Reality Distortion Bubble'.

Hehe, fanboy or not, that was pretty interesting :)
Already forwarded your comment to two or three of my artist buddies. Definitely an interesting idea -- and cool to see Weta are already on-board with the iPhone!
I didn't know they were IPS panels. Juicy contrast and colour!
