Apple responsible for 99.4% of all mobile app sales in 2009
We knew it was going to be big, but I don't think anyone thought for a moment that Apple's market share would be 99.4% of the three billion total app sales. Gartner's market research results from 2009 are in and, as Ars Technica reports, the figures are utterly astronomical. Not only were there two and a half billion app sales in 2009 (up from 500 million in the second half of 2008), but the trend looks like it's going to go straight on up. In 2010, fuelled by Android and continued iPhone adoption, there will be an estimated four and a half billion apps, for a total revenue of 6.8 billion dollars. By 2013, Gartner predicts 21.6 billion app sales for a total revenue of 29.5 billion dollars.
I think we're going to see a fervent interest from Microsoft, Palm, and RIM in the App Store sales model in the coming year.
We'll also see if the Android market place is capable of pulling the same profits as the Apple App Store.
Despite the competition, and the fact that it's still early days for everyone but Apple, Gartner and Ars Technica think that Apple could hold on to as much as two thirds of the mobile app market.
With Apple's new product launch just a few days away, this could be a very good year indeed.

Does this include paid apps, because other mobile platforms have quality standards
The 99 cent app concept only encourages the store to be filled with useless crap. Using BB as a counterexample (because it's what I'm most familiar with) App World has a $2.99 minimum for paid apps. The reasoning behind that is if you don't think your app is worth 3 bucks, why are you charging for it at all beside trying to cash in. Make it good, or make it free.
One other thing to consider is that with the iPhone you can ONLY get your apps from itunes, whereas everyone else (except webOS, and even then I'm not sure it's written in stone) devs have the option of distributing their app however they want.
