Coming soon: upload, store, share ANY file type with Google Docs
Google has been insisting for years that the mythical GDrive doesn't exist. But the company has been offering huge amounts of free online storage to Gmail, Picasa, and Google Docs for years. And while Google still insists that the GDrive doesn't exist, the company is preparing to roll out a new feature: the ability to upload any file type to Google Docs. If it walks like a GDrive...
Once uploaded, you'll be able to share files with friends, mark them as public, or keep them private. You'll be able to view text, office, and image files online using Google Viewer. Although you can also upload video files, there's no video player yet.
There are a few caveats. Your files will need to be 250MB or smaller. And free accounts get just 1GB of storage. If you want more you'll have to shell out some cash for additional space.
TechCrunch reports that Google will begin rolling out the universal upload feature over the next few weeks. I went to test it and was able to upload a video file. But when the upload was complete, I got an error message letting me know that AVI videos aren't supported yet. So I guess no GDrive for me just yet.

For sure this cloud computing service serves a lithmus paper for their chromium milestone this year. This update sure is sweet, albeit 250 megs is very little however the convenience it can give is highly lucrative. Well, if google will scale this one up for sure box.net will find now a very good competitior.

$5 for 20 gb of online storage? If they create some kind of "Dropbox"-like application I'm sold

Except for a the higher per file limit (250MB vs. 50MB), I do not see any advantage in this over Microsoft's existing Skydrive service, which offers 25GB of free storage.
To be fair, adding another 24GB of storage for Google Docs would cost only and additional $6 per year, which could make all the difference if you have files larger than 50MB.

exactly why its a good deal. Skydrive is good, and once they merge Skydrive and Live Mesh, MS will have a great syncing program on its hands. BUT the 50mb file limit is a problem imo
if anything, I plan on using both (its only $5!)

Dropbox has some very unique features, such as backup and sincronizing 4 different devices and also 2 gb free for you.

Its not going to replace my USB stick. My USB doesn't have a 250mb files size limit.
Not bad though.
