Firefox for Mobile 1.0 gets a release candidate
Good news, Nokia users! if you're fortunate enough to own one of those swish Maemo-powered smartphones: Firefox for Mobile has hit 1.0! The beta releases have been picking up pace, and now with the release candidate (RC) and a beautiful logo, Mozilla means business with Firefox for Mobile!
Unfortunately this is just for Maemo-based devices, a distribution of Linux based on Debian. Right now there's only two devices that support Firefox for Mobile, the N900 and N810. There's an alpha branch for Windows Mobile, but no mention of any other version in development. Pavlov notes that there are Windows, Mac and Linux desktop builds if you want to start developing add-ons.
Adoption of the Nokia/Maemo smartphones is minuscule compared to the iPhone OS- and Symbian-based devices. Then couple that with the news that Nokia only intends to release one Maemo-based phone in 2010, and you can't see Firefox for Mobile really taking off this year. Maybe 2011...

I don't know what took so long to make Maemo a phone OS anyway. I remember seing the n800 years ago and thinking, "I want THAT... but as a phone". I guess Nokia was busy with Symbian.

Ya... phones are progressing so quickly I'm sure it's more a case of getting lucky than actually predicting accurately what to spend your R&D dollars on :)

Maemo is dying. Shame for firefox, it looks like they're going to lose the mobile browser race. WebKit adoption is going to make it impossible for other systems to come in.
That may ultimately have a big impact on the desktop. It'll definitely give Apple a much more influential role in shaping future web standards (for better or for worse).

Take how long it's taking to get Skyfire to BlackBerry and multiply by 2.
