Notepad GNU is Windows Notepad on steroids
When you ask about a free alternative to Windows Notepad, chances are good that Notepad ++ will be recommended to you. Another alternative which doesn't get mentioned as often is Notepad GNU.
It occupies the space in between Notepad and Notepad ++. Notepad GNU does offer loads of features, though not quite as many as Notepad ++. Which is fine, because plenty of people just want Notepad with a few tweaks like line numbers, bookmarks, and syntax highlighting. Notepad GNU does all that and more!
I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the foreign language install menus - not a surprise, since the developer's site is in Russian. Click through, and you'll wind up with an English language interface when you launch the app.

How does Notepad GNU compare with TED Notepad from http://jsimlo.sk/notepad/

the whole point of notepad++ is that it has syntax highlighting for any computer language, and more can be added with plugins.
this is nothing like notepad gnu, all it does is show line numbers
theyre both lightweight so notepad++ is better, dont bother with this

How about the modified version of Notepad2? That's pretty awesome! Also, there is an installer available that will replace your Windows Notepad!

the whole subject of notepad replacement i think have been played out.
there are as many notepad "replacements" as there are sand grains on a beach.
unless there's something truly groundbreaking, i think they all are pretty much the same.

I read this post and I downloaded Notepad GNU, thinking it would be good. It's not. The faults I've found in this short time:
1. Some installation options are illegible (probably written in some other language), so I didn't know what those options were and unticked them.
2. It's slow. Moving the cursor up and down using the keyboard has some lag.
3. Moving the cursor down (using keyboard) to a shorter line leaves the cursor past the edge of the line. This is wrong, it should move to the real end of the line.
4. Pressing Esc in a document closes the window. Maybe this was meant to be a shortcut but I didn't expect this.
5. Adding spaces at the beginning of the line then pressing backspace to remove a space removes all of the spaces, putting me back at the beginning of the line. Pressing backspace should remove one character (the last one typed).
6. While editing, pressing Del doesn't delete the character to the right of the cursor.
7. There's a thin vertical line down the entire screen, about half way across. I guess this is meant to represent the right edge of a printed page. Not useful to me since I'm editing code files.
8. No tabbed documents. Dragging a new file onto the window (from Explorer) closes the current document and opens the new one.
That's all for now. Overall it's not good. To the person who asked about TED, TED is better than this. Notepad++ is also better (as expected).

I think SublimeText for Windows machines was groundbreaking. Notepad++ is also cool though.

I'm also currently using Notepad2 http://www.flos-freeware.ch/notepad2.html which has (microsoft) Notepad's speed of loading but plenty of useful features too. Wish there was a Wordpad2. (I've googled).

*Stands up and says name* I'm a notepadaholic, it's been two hours since i last used.
These other strains are not pure, they cut them with all this extra gui-mess. What I'd really love to see is a clean modern looking note taker. Something that doesn't use a floppy disk icon to represent saving (seriously that's so 1980's)
*wanders off muttering about how he could stop using notepad anytime, anytime*
