British man jailed for 7 years escapes prison, updates Facebook status while on the run
Update 13 January 2010: He's been caught!Only in England, I tell you!
He has almost 4,000 followers at the time of writing, so you can imagine why the British police are a little annoyed right now. It's hardly good publicity to have an escaped convict openly parading his freedom on a large social network in front of his friends, family and fans.
A quick look at his updates reveal gems such as: "Quick question....HOW MANY COPS ARE IN HERE TONIGHT!?" or "Thinking maybe we should get some fan t shirts made. What you think mates?"
Some thieves are seemingly more intelligent than others...

How times change... These guys used to leave notes for the police to find, now they update their facebook profiles for their followers to see.

Criminals probably leave calling cards with a link to their Facebook page on it...

It hardly ever pays to PO the police.

Certainly is bringing quite a bit of anti-police sentiments out. Then again, it's the internet, what does one expect.

Didn't know they allowed computer Internet access anywhere in jails. Plus he has been incarcerated for 7 years how was he able to have a Facebook page when Facebook was opened on September 26, 2006 to everyone of ages 13 and older with a valid e-mail address. He would have been in jail at that time. The numbers and information don't quite add up....
Free is good....

I think we have some wires crossed!
He recently escaped from jail, and then set up a fan page -- or something like that.
Light/medium-security prisons have most amenities, like computers/Internet access (I think). But pretty sure the fan page came after he got out. (If you follow the links, there's a lot of info.)

I don't know where you got your info from, but Facebook was available in 2004....
Kenn.keeperDec 29th 2009 2:37PM
Nick: If you did a bit more research and "Read" more you would be only correct when you said Facebook started in February 2004, but it was only limited to Harvard students at that time as well as other colleges there-after. It was not available to the general public until 2006.
Yes Sebastian I misunderstood the first part of article.......it can be taken two ways.

What's really sad about this is he's not just some teenage burglar down on his luck. He's been done for aggravated burglary, which means he went into someones house with a weapon that could harm or kill. I can only see one reason for doing that. So any support he's getting is really sad.

agreed... and it just confirms my opinion that facebook is for losers.
Unfortunately, here in the UK we can't shoot dicks like this when they come into our homes... not without a whole lot of crap coming our way anyway. I'm rooting for the "British Feds" [classic] on this one.
go on boys... smash his facebook in !
SamDec 29th 2009 5:49AM
Too right, unfortunately even if he came into your home with a knife or baseball bat, if you beat him down you'd be done for GBH or Manslaughter if you did it right. I hope the coppers catch the b*****d, anyone who breaks into people's homes, raids their stuff and is prepared to harm or kill the poor victim deserves to rot in jail.
Sebastian AnthonyDec 29th 2009 9:32AM
I'm glad someone appreciated the British Feds line. The potential jokes available to a British writer on an Americentric blog are almost endless...
I think it's worth noting that, from a legal-annoyance standpoint, America is probably worse than here.
But yeah -- the whole not-able-to-defend-yourself-against-burglars is a little retarded.
Drew GreenDec 29th 2009 7:48AM
At least he's smart enough not to carry a Twitter Peek around with him to update his status. Location triangulation is a bitch!

Criminals are smart!
Well, the ones that aren't caught...
