Microsoft submits new patent: now watch as the number of well-endowed girls on the Internet declines
Some plucky researchers at Microsoft have just applied for a new patent, and it doesn't immediately come across as all that desirable. Its purpose: generating realistic avatars.Your avatar is how you portray or display yourself on the Internet, be it on a forum or virtual world like World of Warcraft. An avatar usually takes the form of who you want to be, not who you are. Becoming someone else, if only for a short period, is part of the allure of the Internet -- it's escapism at its most pure.
It's interesting to see such a technology being worked on. You can see its appeal -- perhaps for family video games, like on the Wii -- but you can also imagine more nefarious uses. (Would all the blonde 15-year-olds from California suddenly disappear from the Internet?) Slashdot is reporting that its primary use will be to encourage users/gamers to exercise: your health records would be used to generate a fat avatar in a gaming environment. The theory is that it would drive the gamer to lose weight, with hopes of becoming a prettier Elf.
Imagine trying to pick up cute girls with a hideously over-weight avatar: it's a crazy idea, but, when you think about it, it might just work. (This is assuming that the cute girls are using the same technology to generate realistic-looking cute-girl avatars...)

And how exactly are they going to convince people to submit medical records to a gaming company? For that matter, how are they going to verify them? I highly doubt doctors' offices are going to be thrilled about needing to submit monthly paperwork just so their patient can get a better avatar.

It's a good question. I presume this could be part of 'medicinal' gaming programmes -- like the whole 'fat camp' thing, where people have to power a TV with an exercise bike.
Or... well, who knows. Maybe it just searches Google for whatever public records you've accidentally put online :P

It's called Microsoft HealthVault. Bing it and you'll see.

I Googled it -- is that OK?

Thanks for the tip :)

Because we all know that only hot chicks play games online...
Perhaps its better to just keep it on voice chat and imagine that their cute high-pitched voices are coming from a desirable frame.

Or you could just be totally crazy and go out and actually meet girls.

Just speaking anecdotal experience, but... I have met quite a few cute girl gamers...! (as in, like, meet-meet -- not shut-my-eyes-and-use-my-imagination meet).

Team Microsoft: Once again solving a problem that doesn't exist with a product nobody wants.
(And we thought these guys were supposed to be smart?)

Christian Bale is the same height as me, 6'0' and at 200 pounds, but all muscle. How will Ms decode things like that? I am at 150 or so, no muscle, does that mean my avatar will have a better chance at appealing to girls over Chubby Christian Bale?

Doesn't this work by looking at you on a webcam and judging? Seems like that'd be the simplest way, without medical records or having to compare you to Christian Bale or whatever.
