Microsoft (attempts) to challenge Steam with new game download service

Games on Demand will enable Windows users to purchase LIVE-enabled games directly from the Games for Windows LIVE app. Microsoft's mission? "Our goal has always been to create a seamless online gaming experience for the Windows community, and Games on Demand is a great step toward that end."
It's not initially clear what Microsoft intends to bring to the market with Games for Windows LIVE. It's basically a clone of Xbox LIVE: achievements, gamerscores, voice chat -- it's all there. But other than 'TrueSkill' matchmaking, I can't really see what Games for Windows LIVE brings to the dirty, sticky, crumb-strewn gaming table.
It's clear that Microsoft has decided to turn its steady, Sauron'ish gaze upon Valve's Steam. It's clear that they fancy a bit of Steam's lucrative, virtual monopoly of the PC games-on-demand market. What isn't so clear is just how they're going to dissolve Valve's empire. It takes work to integrate games into a framework such as Steam or Games for Windows; Microsoft better have something juicy up its sleeve to entice game developers. Like, er, paying the developers for exclusive distribution rights. I can hardly wait...

Windows G.O.D. ??

Ho ho ho :)

Correction: The LIVE service is the same thing, on both XBOX and Windows. It's no clone, just a different platform for the same service.
Anyway, it seems like a good way to distribute games. I love Steam, but I tend to find that there are some games which aren't available through it. Games on Demand should fill that void for me.

So, Microsoft isn't allowed to compete with other companies now?
Sebastian AnthonyDec 15th 2009 4:47PM
Of course they are!
But the PC games market is already dwarfed by the console market. I just REALLY don't want to see exclusive titles on both Steam and the LIVE service. That'll be painful.

Now you're getting it. ;-)

That is so meh... it will be just like Google Lively or Google Knol. Nobody will use it. Steam is already too big for a company even as large as Microsoft to beat it. Knowing M$, they are going to make some sort of mistake and then everyone will use Steam again.

I haven't bought a Games for Windows game in years. Most of them are pretty annoying. They really polluted the notion when Halo 2 was the flagship game with that label...and was only available for Windows Vista.
Still, it'll be interesting to see how this plays out. Microsoft pulled a surprising move out of their hat with Bing and its subsequent partnerships, and so I wouldn't write off their efforts just yet. But you won't catch me tossing Steam and Impulse in the Recycle Bin just yet. ;)

Just had a look and prices are not competitive. I only use Steam for the sales, otherwise I shop around for cheap retail prices.
JamesDec 15th 2009 9:31PM
Wow, let's see how their download prices stack up when they're subjected to actual *capitalism* (unlike, say, XBLM). Their idea of a "sale" heretofore has been 20% off a 3-year-old game nobody likes, while Steam and D2D have 75% off 3-month-old bestsellers. I hope they figure out the market...
Sebastian AnthonyDec 16th 2009 9:43AM
Here's hoping they work it out, and don't just buy-up major franchises to appear exclusively on their download service... here's hoping.

... not quite as punchy as 'Steam' ...
It would be if it was shortened to GoD.
Sebastian AnthonyDec 16th 2009 9:43AM
It's nice to think that they were in fact aware of that acronym...

Steam isn't exactly friendly internationally. The prices for international purchasing tend to be pretty high (Depends on where you live) and Microsoft has a bigger presence overseas, where folks may not have even heard of Steam.
Also, competing services isn't always about the consumer, in that it may be cheaper or even free for publishers to put their software on the new Microsoft service, where Steam charges or takes a percentage. I don't know if that's the case or not, but my point is that publishers may choose to deliver content in ways other than Steam if their prices aren't competitive, so having more competition in this marketplace is good to keep everyone honest.

I've been using OpenDNS as my content filter. Gets some people upset that are visiting but I just don't want any of porn on my network. This seems to be a nice portal way of blocking the content but one can easily have a install chrome/etc, use IE, or portable version of firefox.

... so steam client for mac/linux -- right?
ps: password saving app changed my orignal comment
Sebastian AnthonyDec 17th 2009 5:08PM
I was trying to work out what that comment was for... :P
I'm sure if more games support Mac and Linux, Steam would also be ported. I guess this is a chicken/egg situation tho'.
DorianDec 18th 2009 3:30AM
There are plenty of big name games out there that are for the mac (Dragon Age should be coming out in a few days). I threw together this list for a forum post, so i'll copypasta it here:
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Need for Speed Carbon
Football Manager 2010 (been seeing this promoted on steam ALOT)
Osmos
Civilization IV
Command & Conquer Red Alert 3
Lego Star Wars/etc
Star Trek: D-A-C
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
The Chronicles Of Riddick
Rome: Total War Gold Edition
The Sims 3
Warhammer Online: Age Of Reckoning
City of Hero
World of Goo
Braid
The Penny Arcade games
Every PopCap game
Also the huge mac fan that port games themselves on mac (via wine/etc). CoD MW 2 (fan port) is the top mac game torrent on pirate bay. Borderland isn't far behind.
Sebastian AnthonyDec 18th 2009 7:05AM
Wow, I didn't know MW2 had been ported -- that's pretty awesome :)
And I'm glad they're following through with their promise to bring DAO to the Mac.
BrandonDec 18th 2009 12:27AM
That would be awesome if it had an indie game section for us XNA devs!
