Dragon brings high-quality dictation to the iPhone
Typing on an iPhone can be a pain, even with auto-correct -- sometimes especially with auto-correct, actually -- but there hasn't been a truly great speech-to-text app for the device yet. Well, get ready to give your fingers a rest. If the demo of Dragon's new iPhone dictation app that I just saw over at Gear Diary is any indication, practically perfect speech-to-text is now available on the iPhone. Dragon does have some quirks. Obviously, speaking slowly and clearly helps, and you have to speak the punctuation you want ("comma," "period.") You only get 30 seconds at a time, but you can add snippets onto one another, so that's not a huge limitation. Also, in case you stumble over your words, or Dragon makes a rare mistake, you can pop open a keyboard and manually edit your text.
Oh, and Dragon for the iPhone is also free, for a limited time. No word on how much it will eventually cost, but now's the time to snap it up.
Check out the video from Gear Diary after the jump.

Dunno why it did this but I installed this app, read through their giant EULA, accepted it and it posted a message saying "Updating Contacts."
It did not ask for permission to touch my contacts which is a big no-no in book so the application was immediately deleted.

The EULA said it was going to do that. It uploads the audio file for offsite transcription. It indexes your contacts so it can better detect names for you.

Any free version of this sort of technology available for non-iPhone usage? And why isn't this a feature of Google Docs, they've got the cloud based voice recognition capabilities built into the iPhone Google app...

I don't know whether my pronunciation is that bad, but this software did not write one sentence when I tried it. Some quirks?

Dragon works like a charm. The wife loves it as well. At about 0:49 on this video you did something to show an index of app icons and then flicked to scroll through multiple screens. That was great - how did you do it?

How does he get the smaller page views of the apps at 0:48 to quickly navigate through to the last page, before launching Dragon?
It looks like a shortcut with the Home button that I don't know about!
