Microsoft Office 2010 confirmed for June 2010

A Microsoft spokesman just confirmed with Betanews that Office 2010 will be released in June... 2010! This reincarnation of Microsoft's fattest cash cow will be much of the same with incremental rather than revolutionary updates to its primary productivity suite. Other than Microsoft Web Apps of course which sound really cool.

In fact, Microsoft Office Web Apps, which will most likely reach the public's hands at the same time as Office 2010, is the only really exciting prospect that awaits us in June. Microsoft still haven't finalized what tools will be available in their Web Apps, though: "what will and what won't be in the Web Apps is really based on customer feedback and usage scenarios" -- i.e. we can hope for Outlook-in-the-browser to compete with Gmail, but whether it will actually appear or not... who knows!

It seems, from the extensive, juicy info that one of Microsoft's senior directors told Betanews, that Microsoft Office Web Apps are going to be rather neat. Expect to see Silverlight used extensively and lots of functionality pitched in direct competition against Google's online web app suite. They're finally aiming for ease of use and customer satisfaction. The tyrannical, you'll-eat-what-we-feed-you-dammit monopolist facade may finally be dropping.
