Millions of Karmic Koalas descend on the 'net as Ubuntu 9.10 downloads go live
As usual, there are plenty of ways to get your hands on the new OS. Unlike Windows 7, that includes certified, honest to goodness torrents straight from Canonical. They're already fairly well seeded, so P2P downloads should be nice and speedy.
To save you sifting through the massive list of links, here are the three big ones:

Wish I could throw the latest UNR on my Dell Mini 9 but there's no way after I spent so much time getting Snow Leopard on there. My Dell E1505 will have to suffice for the full version.

Usually I'm adventurous when it comes to loading new OS' and such, but it was a total PITA to get SL on my Mini. I have another machine (actually a few others) that I can put Ubuntu on, and actually, as of this writing, I already have. Overall, I'm not really that impressed with 9.10. It totally hosed my 9.04 when I tried to upgrade and my wifi did not work out of the box, even though it did with 9.04.

Is the package selection of 64-bit as good as 32-bit? Any reason to use one over the other at this point?

I've been using Jaunty x64 for a few months now, and not a single architecture problem. I've had a problem or two when I installed Jaunty via Wubi for some reason, but none with a real (non-Wubi) Ubuntu install. And if you ever have any architecture problems, you can always force the installation with getlibs.
A tip: go to http://noncdn.releases.ubuntu.com//karmic/ and download the torrent of the *.iso. It'll be way faster than Ubunut's servers for at least a few days. Just make sure you get the right one. For a regular 64-bit desktop install (as opposed to an upgrade), you'll want the "ubuntu-9.10-desktop-amd64.iso.torrent" file.

Oh, and the reason you'd want to choose the x64 edition is if you have more than 3GB of ram, since you need a 64-bit OS to take advantage of it.

I have installed Windows 7 Professional on my desktop a few days ago.... I'm not as optimistic about it as I was during all the previews. It turns out to be even more Vista and less XP...
Seriously considering on making a full switch to Ubuntu. For this to happen I first need to make sure:
- My video card is supported (tried 8.04 and had loads of problems with my videocard).
- I can use Adobe's CS4 suite because I don't think there's a replacement for Photoshop, Flash, Premiere and After Effects.
When I have a drive formatted I will first try to dual boot to test this.

GIMP is an excellent alternative to Photoshop. Also, Cinelerra is a great video editor with a lot of features.

The last time I tried Gimp (while trying 8.04) it was miles behind on the combination of Bridge and Photoshop CS4. I will give both programs a try when I have Ubuntu up and running though, thanks!

I installed 9.04 and was able to install almost everything. i have a dual boot with xp and it works seamlessly almost that is (minor issues with ntfs read write exist but should be able to close that out) i changed my video card and it worked seamlessly did not even bother me to load a driver. My xp installation asked me to. loaded some other driver for some other work and it worked as well

Doh! I just (out of the blue) downloaded and installed 9.04 yesterday. Is there a big difference, or is this just the first non-beta 9.x release? Is there an easy upgrade path from 9.04 to 9.10?

just let Synaptic download the updated packages for you, instead of reinstalling
by the way, you'll want to have it select a different repository mirror (there's a tool part of Synaptic to automatically scan for the fastest mirror to you) instead of using the main Ubuntu server, so that it will download the updated packages much faster

although not all of the mirrors have had Karmic uploaded to them yet, but it lets you select from a list too so you can pick from somewhere you know is close to you ( a lot of colleges are mirrors)

Been running it for a while now and love it. It is the best Ubuntu release thus far.
