Amazon begins offering same-day delivery in select cities
Amazon has made a name for itself by offering a huge selection of goods for sale over the internet, available in many parts of the globe, often with free shipping. Now the company is offering super-fast shipping to sweeten the deal in a handful of locations.
Customers who live in New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, Baltimore, Las, Vegas, and Seattle can select same-day deliver if they place an order early enough in the day (before 10:00AM in most areas, and before 1:00PM in Seattle).
Of course, same-day delivery ain't exactly free budget shipping. Amazon Prime members, who pay $79 per year for some extra perks will have to pay $6 per item for the speedier delivery. Non Prime members will have to pony up substantially more cash. The New York Times notes that a box of diapers will set you back $15 in shipping. When I checked the shipping charges for an HD media player, it was closer to $20.
What do you think? Are you more likely to buy something if shipping is fast? Or cheap?

Cheap for sure. If I need something that fast, I'll spend quite a bit less on fuel/travel by driving down to the store

As someone who uses Prime, though not in any of the cities with the new same-day option, I have to say I like the deal. Sure, if I needed to buy diapers, it is probably not the best deal, though if I wanted something like a monitor or a TV or something that is a little more expensive, I don't think 6 extra dollars is bad at all. This is even more true when you consider that Amazon does not collect sales tax and that you are probably getting a better deal to start with. The more I think about it this is actually a great deal. Lets say you are traveling on business and you are in NY for two nights you realize as you sit in the airport before your flight you forgot a bunch of cables for your presentation. You go and order them and they are at your hotel by the time you get there for the show the next day. You didn't have to fuss about finding a store. You didn't have to buy overpriced Monster junk. You didn't even have to give up any part of your day.

I think this is a good idea if you absolutely have to have an item today. I personally love my Prime account. I like close enough to a distribution center that I get my stuff in one day already but if I needed something today (like at Christmas) this would be worth the $6 extra with the Prime membership.

I can see how this would be useful.. I live in Philadelphia, and don't have a car, so I am planning to buy my TV online... Since I will need to take off work to be at my apartment for the delivery, it would be great to have a precise day/time, and not have to deal with possibly having to take more than one day off for a missed delivery.
