Microsoft Security Essentials leaves beta, available for download 9/29/2009

We knew it was coming soon, and now we know when: tomorrow, or - depending on whether you read this post before midnight - today.
Yes, Microsoft Security Essentials is set to shed the beta tag and will be available for public download starting September 29, 2009.
Many of our readers have been using the successor to Live OneCare since it first appeared as a leaked (and then official) beta build back in June of this year. Reviews have generally been very favorable. MSE has been praised for its good detection rates, infrequent false positives, scanning performance, and minimal resource utilization.
Once the download is live, you'll be able get Security Essentials right from Microsoft's web site. Chances are good that you will also be able to get your hands on the final version from Softpedia - just in case you need a backup plan.
MSE will be offered to users in 19 countries including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.
If you've used the MSE beta, share your experience in the comments!

You can easily find the wallpaper on Google Images with search = "virtual insanity". Found one anyway sized 1280x1024, saw 1024x768, other sizes not sure! I sort of like (like like love) this wallpaper as well :)

Is this compatible with xp or just vista and 7?

It does work on XP, I have it on my Desktop running Vista and my Netbook running XP Home.

I don't want to go through another CentralPoint fiasco: sticking with Avast.
For those whose who weren't around in the good old pre-Windows 95 days, here's an interesting quote about the now defunct Microsoft Anti-virus (acquired from Central Point):
"This product became noted as determining that the upgrade program of Windows 95 was detected as a computer virus, something which was embarrassing to Microsoft."

Cool, I actually like Microsoft Security Essentials, it's light weight.

The site's throwing a "We are sorry, the page you requested cannot be found." error.
That means everything's working, right?

Does not work on XP Pro 64...
make something that doesn't even run on your own OS.
Brilliant!

How does this integrate with or replace windows defender? do they target the same threats? does security essentials replace defender?

Here is a Quote from ArsTechnica:
"Microsoft warns that MSE should not be installed alongside any other antimalware application. Indeed, MSE's installer disables Windows Defender completely, which makes sense as it is a sort of superset to Windows Defender".

Can we install it on PCs at office ? Some of other popular av software, such as avg/avast gives permission for install on only home use(private) computer.
If MSE can be installed on any kind of Windows computer above XP, then it's gonna be a strong counter part of other free av program.

I have been using the beta sense just after it came out. Over all not bad for being free. Good enough and easy enough for what I need in my Vista and W7. My only grip is that uses Windows Update to download new definitions.
Most other free programs don't have or want access to windows Update so tell them to go out and get the update.
The problem is most people don't trust Microsoft with there updates. I know I don't. So I don't have them Automatically download. I have it notify me when there are updates and then I choose to download them or not. before I would get a notification maybe once a week of a Windows Update. now with being a part of it, I get one almost everyday (for a while there I was). So now I have to manage Microsoft Updates and when I want them to install. AND I have to always make sure I get the latest for Essentials. I wish there was a way to allow Essentials to update on is own like other programs, with out going through windows Update.

I feel you on the trusting MS updates, they keep trying toupdate my LAN driver in my server. Each time that happens it becomes inoperable. Nonethe less every couple of months a new driver comes out that does the same thing.

IS anyone having trouble with the msmpeng.exe service? I decided to give this a try, but the a formentioned service is hovering around 80-99% usage intermittently.
The problem happens on a copy on Vista business and on an install of Vista ultimate. I guess this is how MS plans on stopping viruses on your ocmputer- you cant use it!
seriously, the entire system comes to a halt to wait for this exe do finish doing whatever its doing. sometimes its 5 minutes, sometimes if 5 hours. Ridiculous.

As you know Microsoft has released a free antivirus called Microsoft Security Essentials which is aimed primarily at emerging markets and it promises a basic protection and a simple interface. Microsoft Security Essentials is the replacement of Windows Live OneCare, which was paid. A transition for free of use which also means that less functionality for a solution to fight in real time against viruses, spyware, trojans and rootkits. This loss of functionality is the mockery of publishers who market competitive solutions. For more information on it's installation and interface visit http://www.techarena.in/review/12675-microsoft-security-essentials.htm
