"...while the figure does of course include a large number of, er, 'substandard' applications (mitigated by the 'anything goes' approval process of Google's market)..."
Right, 'cause the 101 fart apps in apple's store are high quality applications.
The number of apps any of these products have is completely irrelevant and meaningless. It's nothing but apple's marketing hype - followed by the rest of them. Think about it for a second - when did any developer or publisher boasted the number of software products they created? Never, because it doesn't matter. In fact, isn't the standard reply of apple's fanboys when somebody uses the number of windows applications vs. mac as a reason why "windows is better" is "quality over quantity" - oh how fast they change their tune.
At the end of the day it is _the quality_ that matters. I mean does anyone really care if apple's store has 76k apps or 30k apps, if all they use is 20, or 10, or even 5?
And while on an app-by-app basis Android doesn't beat apple (though apple doesn't beat Android either, since it's all completely subjective), it does have two big advantages over apple - open source environment and no "big brother jobs" watching over and filtering every app that comes in. And unless apple changes their policies, I think Android is going to be, if not bigger, definitely a more important player - simply because developers are free to innovate more on the Android platform, and that's where all the new and cool stuff are gonna be coming from.

I'm with you, there are some pretty substandard apps coming from apples decidedly NOT "anything goes" approval process. Unfortunately though, google's attitude being better isn't going to translate to marketshare easily. The UI's and form factors, as well as the support community (and lets not even talk about marketing) of the two devices are completely different, and decidedly in apple's from most standpoints. You and I might want a more open platform, but most people buying Iphone don't really care about open standards. They want something that works well, looks nice, and has a wide range of apps (note this makes numbers important). And yes, sadly, some of them want a device with lots of fart apps. Until google captures more of these people, and I hope its getting there, Apple's platform is going to attract more of the talented developers making cool apps. Network externality's a bitch, but you can't deny its power.
