Off the Clock: Pr0nSpider helps you - er, your friends - safely download NSFW images and videos
Intro: Off the Clock is something we've kidded about in our newsroom for a while. The plan: write up some apps that aren't quite made for the 9-to-5(ET) RSS feed. Nothing serious, just harmless, grown-up, after hours stuff.
It's pretty rare that you can tell a software developer is totally up front about what truly motivated him or her to develop an application. In the case of Pr0nSpider, however, it's painfully clear to anyone who's been in his situation that he's being straight up with us.
Any technician I've ever met is all too familiar with the "thems not my pr0ns" speech. Born of the frustration caused by yet another "I dunno how my PC got so screwed up, dog" phone call, Pr0nSpider aims to keep your clueless-but-horny pals from getting into trouble. Well, at least from getting their Windows PC in trouble.
Here's how the magic happens. Fire up Pr0nSpider and select some categories (like the Jeopardy-esque Potpurri). Press go, and it springs into action, hoovering the appropriate inappropriate images from a handful of well-known sites. They're automatically dumped into Program files\Pr0nSpider\Output (or Program files x86\... on 64-bit Windows).
Google's image search is also supported as a source because - contrary to popular belief - Bing isn't the only search engine where you can find a whole slew of dirty thumbnails.
Obviously, you're at the mercy of Pr0nSpider's computational kung fu. At least this way there are no confusing banner averts or clickjacking schemes to worry about - and no one wants to catch something nasty whilst trolling for free nudies.
FSF advocates don't need to feel guilty getting excited about this app - Pr0nSpider is totally open source.
Since administrative access is needed to write to that folder on Vista and Windows 7,you your friend may need to right-click and run as administrator.
So I've heard. I mean, it's not like I test every application I write about.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go uninstall something totally unrelated to this post.

I use NavNet instead. not only does it scrape the net for images you search for (whether it be prons or not) but it also lets you get images from private photobucket accounts by running through common camera filenames.
Good stuff.

Everyone does realize that your IT admins can tell every site you've been to, right? Like this thing doesn't make your browsing while on a corporate network, like, you know, secret...right? You DO know that, right?

OK... now the question:
Lee, how did you come up with the idea to write about this type of software? lol
MarcoSep 13th 2009 4:06AM
Ah and thanks :-) Searched (for a friend) for "amateurs". This software helped me a lot. Instead of amateuers, ugly naked 80 year old women. You made my day, Lee. I'll NEVER EVER look at pr0n again.
