LogMeIn Hamachi updated to version 2
LogMeIn's unique VPN solution 'Hamachi' has been updated to version 2.
Hamachi - which is free for non profit use for up to 16 nodes (256 nodes are supported in the subscription based paid version) - is a simple to use VPN solution. The VPN provides 256 bit AES encrypted tunneling across public and private networks and is incredibly easy to manage from a web based interface. Multiple secure networks can be created as required, allowing provision of virtual networks on demand to machines on any type of network connection in any location.
Hamachi's excellent performance has always been its strong point and as such it has garnered a huge following amongst gamers who can take advantage of it's low latency connections and rapid expandability. Inviting a new machine to your Hamachi network is as simple as sharing your network number and password.
As well as a shiny new UI, the newly released Hamachi version 2 adds hub and spoke networks, gateway networks, installation links (click to automatically join networks), network management and client management. At the time of writing, the new release seems to be available for Windows only, with no clients available for Mac, Linux or Windows Mobile contrary to the previous release.
At first glance this might all sound horribly complicated but in fact that is something of a misnomer... Hamachi is powerful but not complex. An example of how Hamachi may be useful to you is to consider how I've used the application in the past.
By installing the client on my machine at home, my machine in the office and my laptop, Hamachi allows me to work with resources directly on those machines regardless of where I am and what type of connection I am on. When i'm across the other side of the world from home in a hotel, I can securely map a drive to my desktop machine and work with the files as if I was in the house. Likewise I can use remote desktop in the same way. That's useful!
The new release of the software also marks the update of the web based interface to integrate it with other LogMeIn products. If you are a user of the excellent 'LogMeIn Free', you will notice that in the web based interface you now have a new 'Networks' option. From here you can create and administer Hamachi networks - you no longer need to log in to a separate site.

On the forums, people are saying clients are dropping off the network with the v2, so for the v1.x users I suggest to wait for an updated version.

Hamachi is the shiznit. My main use for it is gaming, but I've been using it as a remote file server and IM client quite a bit too.
I've noticed that certain games don't work with the latest versions of hamachi (ones released prior to 2.0). Version 1.0.1.5 is the one I've been using as a workaround. Does anyone know if they fixed whatever the issue was with the release of 2.0?
