Fugly Friday : MSY Technology

This week's bin of bargains brought me to MSY Technology (Pty. LTD.. whatever that means). MSY will probably never top a greatest hits list of horrible websites -- with a total lack of dancing house pets, no click the Mel Gibson games, and colors that won't cause psychotic episodes. Those are the nicest possible things you can write about them, in every other respect MSY is awash in sin.
Take this price list for example. If you can make it through 2 colorful stanzas without clawing at your own eyeballs, you're a braver man than I.
by the time you scroll through the second page, you're asking God to bring on the E-bomb to mercifully send us back to paper, quills and candlelight.Somehow, the marketing genius who crafted this abomination in Microsoft Word felt you'd have the stamina to endure twelve whole pages. That's twelve pages of nearly random font size changes, the word "HOT" next to every line item, and an entire page of warnings, disclaimers, addendum and notes in prologue. By the time you scroll through page one, you've forgotten what you were looking for -- and, by the time you scroll through the second page, you're asking God to bring on the E-bomb to mercifully send us back to paper, quills and candlelight.
What's worse? Customers on one Australian review site not only call MSY untrustworthy, unhelpful, filthy and even downright rude but -- one reviewer warns -- if you call them asking for prices, they'll refer you to their website!
Have faith, Fugly Friday Fan. If there is a just and righteous God in our midst, then certainly there is a giant gift basket of FAIL waiting for MSY's web author on his arrival in hell.

Best - maybe only, Computer good deal shop in Australia! Certainly worst website in the whole wide world!!!
Believe me they ain't even interested in talking abt the web site - I tried - years ago.
The website is only good for printing the flubbing SALES PRICE LIST (pdf and sorta OK - anything wld be alright compared to the website) - there's no browsing in the shops and often they don't have any of their own price lists!
This place (MSY) has one sales technique and one only, good low prices on essential computer parts. The rest is stuffing.

If you streetview the first addresses you can see that they don't believe in building maintenance either! Grafitti, broken signs - definitely funky. A throwback to the days when most laptops were overpriced doorstops.

Grant, why don't you google what PTY LTD means before you make a silly comment like that to all Australian readers. It isn't part of the company name itself, it tells you what type of company it is.
Does anyone really care what their website looks like? All you do is print their price list, walk in, wait in queue and tell them what you want and you get the parts. It is the cheapest computer store I know of in Australia.
The website is bad, and maybe they should allow you to purchase products online, but maybe they have a bad website to offer greater discounts on hardware.

Thanks Jack. I already knew what it meant. It was supposed to be a small joke (and I think to our non-Aussie readers, it came off that way).
I appreciate the advice to "Google it". In all my years as a writer, I'd never thought to use Google for research. Do you think Google would be useful for finding other things too? Does anyone else know about this, or is it just you and me?

I am glad that I have contributed to your knowledge on Google, and sorry that I did not get your joke about what PTY LTD.
Before making comments such as "MSY is crap - because their website is lame" , why don't you fly to Australia and see for yourself what MSY is?
I agree that their website is a bit dodgy, but no one goes to it. They just visit http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf (or on the parts list you linked to use control + f (did you know about that one too)?

If the budget for Fugly Friday included a travel allowance large enough to hit Australia for a 300 word post, I can assure you I'd be doing everything in my power to find awful sites located in Tahiti, Amsterdam and the south of France.
Alas, I'm stuck at my desk. Thanks for being a good sport Jack!

Why don't you search of some companies at http://www.abr.business.gov.au and just see how many PTY LTD there are.

Their website may not be the greatest, but try to find a computer store which have prices cheaper!

@ grant .. Your Utter Rubbish Review of this website was pretty disturbing , if you actually lived in Australia you would know that MSY have the best prices around and nearly always have stock . all you do is ring them and say you want this this and this and they are ready to go . it is the most convenient and well organised shop around, In AUSTRALIA we still consider going to a shop to be normal rather than the newegg american way .. epic fail Grant

Grant it sounds like you hit a nerve mate. The link you had in the article said they were bad bad bad, and the reviews on here are good good good. Their website is still crap crap crap though lol The bad reviews were funny as too.

I used to use websites like Centrecom and Scroptec to research products and then stand in a queue at MSY for an hour to save $20, but not anymore. When I went to build a very high-end PC last year, they didn't have any of the parts I wanted, and I really hate the queues and listening to all the novices getting angry when they can't understand a word the foreign-background staff are saying. :)
I get most of my stuff from CPL these days since they also have a store in the CBD near where I currently work. Prices aren't that much more - these days you spend the difference in petrol anyway.
idodialogSep 8th 2009 11:14AM
Well they aren't for high end - they are for your everyday stuff and like you everyone who uses them know that, also shops like CPL are Melbourne only so useless out in the sticks of Adelaide.
But we all will remember MSY as the place you couldn't resist - the staff do everything they can to totally ignore you (except for your order and your payment), advice is unheard of - and yes, what they advertise THEY HAVE IN STOCK.
