Fugly Friday : MSY Technology

This week's bin of bargains brought me to MSY Technology (Pty. LTD.. whatever that means). MSY will probably never top a greatest hits list of horrible websites -- with a total lack of dancing house pets, no click the Mel Gibson games, and colors that won't cause psychotic episodes. Those are the nicest possible things you can write about them, in every other respect MSY is awash in sin.
Take this price list for example. If you can make it through 2 colorful stanzas without clawing at your own eyeballs, you're a braver man than I.
by the time you scroll through the second page, you're asking God to bring on the E-bomb to mercifully send us back to paper, quills and candlelight.Somehow, the marketing genius who crafted this abomination in Microsoft Word felt you'd have the stamina to endure twelve whole pages. That's twelve pages of nearly random font size changes, the word "HOT" next to every line item, and an entire page of warnings, disclaimers, addendum and notes in prologue. By the time you scroll through page one, you've forgotten what you were looking for -- and, by the time you scroll through the second page, you're asking God to bring on the E-bomb to mercifully send us back to paper, quills and candlelight.
What's worse? Customers on one Australian review site not only call MSY untrustworthy, unhelpful, filthy and even downright rude but -- one reviewer warns -- if you call them asking for prices, they'll refer you to their website!
Have faith, Fugly Friday Fan. If there is a just and righteous God in our midst, then certainly there is a giant gift basket of FAIL waiting for MSY's web author on his arrival in hell.

Its a shame that this place has some of the cheapest prices in Melbourne, as well as being conveniently located.

MSY ahhh i knew one day you would appear here and all the wrong details would be said....
MSY is by far the cheapest computer store in Australia y far, they make profit by buying in bulk and selling with the smallest of margins, thus the don't offer customer service.
Also here is a whole forum thread on it :)\

Ha ha! Pretty aweful and the shops are about the same. But I have to disagree with the people who do not like shopping there. I have had nothing but good experiences with the staff.
They are waaay the cheapest place to shop in Australia and the staff are always helpful even if their stock holding is woeful. You get what you pay for and if all you are after is very cheap prices on name brand stuff then hey - you never get nothing for nothing.

Okay, so the website can make you want to claw your own eyes out. A lot of people who shop there just skip the website and go to the PDF directly - and while that ain't pretty, it is pretty easy to find something if you know what you're looking for (if you don't know what you're looking for... good luck, you'll need it).
P.S. Whenever I've called them, they tell me prices.
P.P.S. Pty. LTD = Proprietary Limited - A type of company in Australia. Not hard to find on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proprietary_company)

You're silly. I'd rather a shit website to navigate through and dirt cheap prices then a flashy site who charge with a premium. MSY is aimed at customers with some technilogical know how, not any John Doe who needs to make his PC faster and has no idea how to do it.
If their website really stops you from getting to sleep at night, maybe the third link in a google seach for 'msy' can help you. http://msy.arpatubes.net/ .

WHAT?!
MSY is the best.
the prices are awsome. and the people that said that dont get customer support are prolly average joes looking for a dell computer.
when u go to the store u have to know what u want.
its not target

MSY lol. they are great computer store. i have purchased many computer parts from there and built computers for myself and many friends.
never liked there website, even considered building a proper one for them for free - but i'm too busy.

MSY Rocks. Its simply way cheaper than anything else available in Australia. Anyone who has ever bought from them doesn't go back anywhere else next time.
The website is made to look cheap, obviously they can do a better job. Its inline with their business.
Pty LTD is Proprietary Limited, the standard tag for an Australian Private Company. (I think equivalent to LLC in the US)

I have to agree with this article here because the website is horrible. But this company is always recommended to me by literally every techie i have ever met so they must be someone something right.
Just goes to show, that relying on 'one' single review website to get a basis for some company isn't really very smart.

They are a great shop, if you can find their pdf price list...

Yeah I have to echo the sentiments of the other commenter's here. MSY are pretty awesome. Its very rare that someone will have a cheaper price than them, and while I can't speak for other stores, my local one has some pretty nice staff. They even brought me a free can of coke one day when an alfa romeo slammed into the front of my car, just because they "thought I needed it because i was having a bad day".

Gotta love the first link on the site: "http://msy.com.au/Documents%20and%20Settings/tsuyuan/Local%20Settings/Documents%20and%20Settings/tsuyuan/Local%20Settings/Documents%20and%20Settings/tsuyuan/Local%20Settings/web/LOCATION/slacks%20creek.html"

You forgot to say that their webpage ogt Hacked via a SQL exploit and was giving useres viruses... they do sell stuff CHEAP but thats it...
DuckSep 5th 2009 12:54AM
Actually, a project a friend of mine did for her Uni degree involved building MSY a new website.
From what I hear, MSY rejected the offer of a new website :P
They're perfectly happy with what they have.
Grant RobertsonSep 5th 2009 2:19AM
So, are you guys saying this is more or less a defacto marketing philosophy?
That's truly bizarre. Eh, to each his own.
I'm glad to hear they aren't as bad as the reviews indicated. For a bit, I was feeling really bad for Australian DIY PC addicts. Is there anything like the U.S's Newegg or Canada's NCIX in AU?
DuckSep 5th 2009 2:26AM
If you're after something that has a bit better service, go for PC Case Gear, they're more expensive but they're pretty cooperative.
Here's the link: http://www.pccasegear.com/
I've had nothing but good encounters with them :)

to Grant - we have no Newegg or anything like it - We are almost devoid of good computer shops - Harvey Norman is national but really mainstream and really expensive - can't even buy a HDD there! There's Tandy (or Dick Smith) which is smaller and worse.
JiSep 5th 2009 12:59AM
That's how MSY rolls haha.
davidSep 5th 2009 1:20AM
I almost think they cultivate such an awful site to look cheap, because they are cheap. They are actually legitimate, despite the bad reviews.
MatthewSep 5th 2009 4:55AM
haha! MSY don't give 2 hoots! That's the image they want to portray, they're all about selling cheap parts! =D
