Make a bootable USB installer for Windows XP, Vista, 7 with WinToFlash
Making a bootable USB flash drive for Windows Vista and Windows 7 isn't all that tricky, but it's always nice to find an app that simplifies things. Not only does WinToFlash make the process about as easy as it can get, but it can also create Windows XP, Server 2003, and Server 2008 installers.
The default options make it easy to roll a silent Windows install, or you can flip the custom switch and specify the exact setup parameters you want to use.
The handy app also has one more trick up its sleeve: moving Windows Preinstall environments. PE discs can be extremely handy for troubleshooting and repairs, and being able to painlessly zap them over to a USB flash drive means not having to burn a new copy every time someone's haggard old optical drive decides to chew up your CD.
WinToFlash is a free download and is totally portable. It's an excellent tool to add to your USB-related utilities.

Unfortunately, I'm not having any luck like you guys. I keep getting an "NTLDR is missing, press a key to restart" error when booting with the usb key that I created using this tool. I tried different versions of this tool, still no luck.
I also tried using another usb key, no luck. There's nothing wrong with my usb keys because I'm able to create a bootable GTparted on it. I really am frustrated at this point. One other thing for me left is to try to make the usb key on my friend's Win XP machine (I have a Win 7 64 bit machine I've been using to create the bootable usb key).
By the way, the laptop I'm trying to restore is an Acer Aspire One netbook (no cd-rom drive).

update: I created a new bootable XP USB key using another machine (Windows XP Home) in WinToFlash. I still get the same freakin NTLDR error. It seems this WinToFlash utility is not creating a bootable usb key afterall. I tried 2 legitimate WINDOWS XP HOME CDs. Help!

Was able to create a WinPE boot disk on a usb key. I'm reformatting as I type and will be running a chkdsk and loading any missing ntldr files if necessary... my last resort would be to buy me a sata to usb adapter to hook up one of my dusty internal cd-rom drive to this Acer One laptop. i'll keep you updated as to what's happening.

ok i solved my problem (or Wintoflash problem perhaps).
- created a usb key with xp home in it using wintoflash utility of course (set the format in advanced settings to Fat 16 CHS to assure no issues come up with format)
- copied the following files: ntldr, ntdetect.com, txtsetup.sif from the windows xp cd over to the usb key root dir.
- now that it's booting up and starting up the usb key, i was able to install windows xp with no CD DRIVE!! What a relief.
- now for the hardest part, I was still getting some kind of error that said "Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem", I FIXED THAT TOO... I edited the boot.ini using Bart PE (how did I create a bootable Bart PE on a usb key?... easy, I just used wintoflash utility, it has capability to create WinPE XP. So I edited the boot.ini and corrected the default values in it... setting the rdisk(1) to rdisk(0)... guess what it's now booting with no issues! All i have to do now is reinstall the other drivers...
- now if the stinking erecovery program (alt+f10) was working in the first place for this stinking acer aspire one aoa150 or zg5 model, then i wouldn't have to sweat blood and tears.
- wintoflash should have included those ntldr files in their utility...

right after pressing enter at the "NTLDR is missing" error...
another error pops up... "bootmgr is missing"

i was able to isolate the bootmgr error to the internal HDD on the laptop. The NTLDR error is isolated to the USB key.

Hi all,
I tried this to install windows XP.
But, when I boot from the USB drive it says,
"Searching for boot record from usb RMD-FDD – OK" and the computer sticks.
Please somebody help me to get through.
Thanks a lot in advance.
