It's official, there's a crapload of malware on the Internet
The actual number of unique samples doesn't necessarily mean all that much. So many of the nasties floating around the Internet are just mutations of other infections. Just look at the vast array of crud SmitFraudFix cleans up - it's a whole lot more than the original SmitFraud infection.
What's much more alarming is the number of infected PCs. Trend Micro points out the following in their blog post: "in the first six months of 2008, [Trend Micro] recorded that 253.4 million systems were infected with malware. The comparable volume for 2009 is almost double at 491.2 million."
That's a whole lotta infections. Trend's opinion on how to tackle the growing threat? Look to The Cloud, of course. They offer four possible benefits:
- Each client is a part of a real-time global protection network.
- When the network detects an Internet security threat on behalf of any one participant in the network, all participants are automatically and immediately protected.
- All devices that connect to the Internet are protected. This protection complements your existing antivirus security solution.
- There's correlation among the global protection network.

I spend 4 hours on Tuesday cleaning up a "PC Antispyware 2010" infection. It was brutal. Millions of man/woman hours have got to be wasted on this junk. I hope there is a special place in hell for malware coders.

Only goes to show you how many are sitting at home being welfare cheats with nothing to do but to sit at their probably stolen computers creating havoc on those who are honest hard working people.......(This is not in reference to those who lose their jobs because of the economy or illness)
These are the type who take no interest in doing anything productive in their lives because of their ineptness in dealing with anything honest. How do I know,,,,,,There are two people that I thought I knew that have been crossed off my list for purposely sending me malware via email to me....just because they thought it was funny....

makes me rethink my stand on infectious antivirus programs... like a rouge avg that infects your computer to clean up other malware. we need something like this now. of course if you already have decent antivirus software it wouldn't 'infect' your system. or at least some that target the worst bugs out there.

So I am going to be forced to sign up for your liberal Democrat "universal antivirus" program? How are we going to pay for this? I suppose anyone with a hard drive bigger than 250gb will be expected to pay the way for those with 40gb laptop hard drives... I don't need some "cloud" bureaucrat coming to my house and telling me that my system is "too old" to save. Keep the cloud out of my computer. This is America!
