I did chkdsk z: /r about two weeks ago on my Win 7 system. And I did some photo editing, ran XAMPP, and streamed some HD video to my PS3. Chkdsk worked fine, I got my work done, and my computer was still very responsive.

What is your spec. I think the BSoD rears it's ugly head when the system in question has a low amount of RAM.
P.s Although I dislike it when I have had BSoD's appear in the past on some machines, I do find the information it gives useful for diagnostic purposes.

I have a quad-core with 4GB of RAM. But like I said, I was doing a whole lot of other stuff and didn't have much free RAM when I started chkdsk.
