Microsoft reveals upgrade paths for Windows 7
Windows users wondering if you'll be able to pop in a shiny new Windows 7 disc, push the Install button, and watch as your computer is upgraded while leaving your data and programs in place, rejoice; Microsoft has released the official list of supported Windows 7 upgrade paths. Here are the highlights:
- Windows XP and below users are out of luck. You must have Windows Vista SP1 or newer to upgrade to Windows 7.
- You can't upgrade to Windows 7 from Windows Vista Starter Edition.
- If you're upgrading from Windows Vista, you must upgrade to one of the standard Windows 7 SKUs (meaning you can't upgrade to Windows N, Windows K, Windows KN, or Windows E.)
- Windows Vista's "Business" SKU is now called "Professional" in Windows 7. Don't be alarmed when you can't find Windows 7 "Business" on the shelves.

You're not going to be able to do in-place upgrades for either of them since Home Premium is a downgrade from both Business and Ultimate. You _might_ be able to do clean installs with the upgrade discs. It really depends on whether the installer is going to be looking for the previous OS on the disk or you validate your previous OS in some other way.

Thanks.....I do have the official microsoft seals on both pc's with the keys on them. My understanding up to this point was that I would be able to clean installs and not upgrades from the upgrade discs and would have to back up my programs and files...which is fine. I hope I can still do this. I cant see how MS would force me to have to get 7 Ultimate just because I have Vista Ultimate.

I don't know why it is so horrifically painful to do what should be REALLY easy, upgrading your OS.
You can't install from an upgrade CD so you have to install another OS and then install the new OS.
You can't upgrade from XP to Windows 7 (effectively cutting off 80% of PC users from a direct upgrade) even though Windows 7 is functionally equivalent to Vista in almost every way and thus should be just as capable of upgrading from XP as Vista is.
You can't go from Ultimate Vista to Home Premium 7 even though the only reasonably priced Windows 7 is the 50 dollar home premium (the 3 license family pack for 150) meaning you're forced to shell out 300 dollars for ultimate just to upgrade.
If you go from 32 to 64 bit OSes you have to do a clean install, its not capable at all of keeping anything during the switch
For the highway robbery price they charge for their OS you would think they could pull together something as simple as upgrading an OS seamlessly. And they wonder why people stick with XP, they make it SUCH a pain in the ass to use anything else.
