DoubleTwist works for windows as well and is definitely worth the time it takes to get your music outside of the walled fortress that is Apple.

Unless you're talking DRM'ed files, of which they are phasing them out, there is no walled fortress when it comes to iTunes.
Hell, Apple provide an API which you can use to get details of any track in iTunes, it's meta-data and the location of the file on the hard-drive.
As such, it's pretty easy to write something which will synchronise content with a non-Apple device - although the experience won't obviously be quite so nice.
