Google Gears now supports Firefox 3.5

Google has released an updated version of Google Gears that, unlike previous versions, supports Firefox 3.5. Gears lets you access some web applications in a browser even when you're offline. For example, you can download your reading list from Google Reader to read on a plane, or use Gmail to read and write email messages while you're offline. When you get back to an internet connection, Gears will send your messages or update your Google Reader or other settings.

Google Gears is available for Mac, Linux, and Windows. You can either grab the latest version from the download page or if you're an existing user you can grab it by using the Firefox add-ons "find updates" option.

I had never used Google Gears until recently, when I started really using Gmail as my main email account and saw that it was possible to use it offline (by the way, I must say that is so awesome... I really don't see I would need to install a local mail program on - such as Thunderbird - on my computer ever again). I couldn't get the stupid thing to install, though, so I gave up.

Then I saw your last post on Google Gears (http://www.downloadsquad.com/2009/07/10/unofficial-google-gears-builds-work-in-firefox-3-5/) and understood why. I got the unofficial version you linked to and now it works fine.

So now that I have the unofficial version, do I have to get rid of it and go grab the official one or will it find the update on its own? It's saying there is no update, but that may be because the Google Gears site is blocked here at work, so I'll try it from home.

Yeah, Gears is great, BUT I don't like one thing - it doesn't encrypt Gmail emails. That's the reason I don't want to use it. But if Google would upgrade Gears to do encryption, I totally would use Gears!

"Find updates" doesn't bring it up yet for me. And why has it taken Google so long to release this? It should have been ready when 3.5 was first released.
