@Jesse -- vmware --- hard to make kits for this as its such a moving target, version wise. Good software, annoying as hell at the same time.

That's why I use VMWare Server as a desktop emulator.
Not to mention, if you have a spare pc you can build with ESXi (free) you get a nice testing playground.

@Jesse -- tried that once, but it was pretty picky about hardware and not well documented about exactly what it was picky about. Maybe it's gotten better now.

you don't need to make vmware images for specific version of vmware workstations/player/server/esx

you make them for specific compatibility profiles and any vmware product newer than the required version will work.
just look how http://easyvmx.com/ does it.
