How to try Google Android on x86 computers with a LiveCD
Want to give Google Android a try, but don't feel like buying a T-Mobile G1? Live-Android lets you download a LiveCD disc image of the Google Android operating system. Just burn the image to a disc, stick it in a CD-ROM drive, and reboot your computer and you can check out Android without installing it or affecting any files on your PC.
You can also use the disc image in a virtualization application like VirtualBox or Microsoft Virtual PC if you want to try the operating system without even rebooting your computer.

What, no VMWare love?
Drew GreenJul 6th 2009 12:03PM
I think he didn't reference VMware b/c they don't offer a free Workstation version. VMware Player isn't quite the same as VBox or VPC, and VMware Workstation isn't free.

VMware Server is free.

@Jesse -- vmware --- hard to make kits for this as its such a moving target, version wise. Good software, annoying as hell at the same time.
JesseJul 6th 2009 12:04PM
That's why I use VMWare Server as a desktop emulator.
Not to mention, if you have a spare pc you can build with ESXi (free) you get a nice testing playground.
Andrew PollackJul 6th 2009 12:05PM
@Jesse -- tried that once, but it was pretty picky about hardware and not well documented about exactly what it was picky about. Maybe it's gotten better now.

you don't need to make vmware images for specific version of vmware workstations/player/server/esx
you make them for specific compatibility profiles and any vmware product newer than the required version will work.
just look how http://easyvmx.com/ does it.

btw, LiveAndroid v0.2 is being uploaded right now, as of this moment only liveandroidv0.2.iso.001 is up

Does it work with all hardware (Speakers/Ethernet/Wifi) ?
Because, its only useful if I can boot up my netbook quickly on the airport and connect to a hotspot.
DuhJul 6th 2009 2:19PM
No you can't fire this up on your netbook because this is a phone build. If you want you can re-tool it to work on your netbook, feel free.
Jash SayaniJul 6th 2009 3:01PM
@Duh: Ok. In that case, I'm very happy with Windows 7.

liveandroidv0.2.iso.002
liveandroidv0.2.iso.001

KrakenJul 14th 2009 11:36PM
You need to download both and join them together.
roshan.manuelJul 15th 2009 12:24AM
AFAIK,
a. liveandroidv0.2.iso.001 is for Live-CD
b. liveandroidv0.2.iso.002 is for ISO image/USB image/Vmware image/Virtualbox image
Ryan KarolakJul 15th 2009 12:45AM
you download both and they combine into one image.
acmeJul 7th 2009 10:04AM
tested it out real quick last night, runs in vbox. tad bit laggy.
vincentJul 15th 2009 11:42AM
Downloading from the servers can be pretty slow, here is a nice and speedy torrent:

What's the usefulness of running the LiveCD instead of the Android emulator from the SDK?
