StatCounter data shows Windows 7 pre-release use closing in on Linux

With the release of Ubuntu 9.04 and developments like Moblin and HP's MIE creating quite stir, plenty of people were saying that 2009 would be 'the year of Linux on the desktop.' Not that the statement hasn't been made before, but there appeared to be some real momentum this time around.
Enter the Windows 7 RC. A quick look at StatCounter's most recent data shows Linux use at .71% and Microsoft's soon-to-be released OS right behind at .68%. StatCounter's chart only shows the top 5 OSes, so you'll need to take a look at the raw CSV data to get the numbers.
Things certainly look good for Windows 7, but let's keep in mind that it's still competitive with Linux on price at this point (read: free). Once people have to shell out their hard-earned money for the new OS, will things change or will Linux still struggle to make gains on Windows?
What are your thoughts?

Linux is free but is it cheap?
I dont think so because, I was lookin for a cheap netbook and was thus willing to go for Ubuntu, which I like.
But, the cost difference between a Ubuntu and XP system was really small.
Also, the Linux based systems had crappy config while the better config all had XP.
Something seems wrong.

Haha, hilarious, Pre-release Win7 use is almost 1/3/rd that of OSX. The "most advanced operating system in the world" is actually competing with a pre-release OS. Man Apple sucks.

Just to remember you guys how windows licenses works...
if you change hardware, you need to get a new license.
If you are running a server, you most likely will change hardware at last one time in 1 year.
If you use a home computer, you'll do very often, but your windows are pirate anyway, so who cares? :-)
I don't use linux cause it's free; i use it cause it is better than windows. You can make it your way(tm), and it is easly automated.
I work with servers and when i install linux, i can do this remotly, so the cost for manutention is very low. When i install windows, often clients pay much more for less work done, cause it takes more time. The advantages don't stop here; in linux, i don't work; my scripts works. In windows, it's not really like that...
Windows is really easy to use. I would never install linux to my mom. neither slackware or ubuntu. It's wonderfull when things just works, but you have a price to pay; performace. The other big point in use windows is to play games. They are really better in windows. I know there exists good games for linux, but you don't want to compare. windows is far better for gamming.
As personal computers gets popularity around the world, is not a big surprise that windows is more used than linux. Just look at the targets, and you'll divine the ways.
