Gmail beefs up its contact manager
Google's contact manager for Gmail has left a lot to be desired for a long time. For once thing, up until recently it didn't have fields for birth dates, web sites, or other information that might be stored in your other address books. But today Google added support for birthday and website information.
Now when you import contacts in CSV format from Outlook, Outlook Express, Hotmail, or Yahoo, or vCard format from OS X address book, the additional information should be copied over correctly. Google added these features to its standalone contact manager a while back, but the integration with Gmail is a welcome addition.
Of course, if you've already imported a few thousand contacts from your Outlook Address book, you're out of luck unless you want to delete all of your Gmail contacts and start again from scratch.

Hoping for some Thunderbird support. Zindus remains, in my experience, a kludgy option.

Turn on IMAP in settings, set up your iphone and you're good to go.

Er ... mine was like that last night but now birthday option has completely gone! I agree with horsethiefbandit - sync it to google calendar! (but don't steal horses)

I tried it yesterday and it works quite well. The only major issue I found is that it reported all the email addresses as "other". It doesn't seem to recognise the difference between primary and secondary emails.
Now all we need is two way syncing between Outlook contacts, support for the pictures of contacts and embedded mini google maps of the home and business addresses and i'd be a happy bloke.

I wish gmail email contacts were similar to thunderbird or yahoo email
in which you could add email addresses from a list instead of the system that gmail is presently set up

I know gmail is free, but there are affordable Contact managers out there. OfficeClip Contact Manager has had the features that Google didnt, like fields for birth dates, web sites, etc.
You guys may want to check this out:

I am new to gmail. Used to have Yahoo. How does one get addresses from the address book into an e-mail? Surely not by typing each letter. I have been copying and pasting but there must be a better/easier way. Thxs, Lil

I can't get this to work. I export from Outlook into a .cvs windows file and then I go diligently through the mapping of the fields and when I finish and bring it into GMAIL I get "unnamed contact" with nearly all the fields from outlook ending up in the notes section. Frustrating.
