Streaming TV comes to Canada thanks to CTV
Pretty much every time we publish an article about Hulu or other web sites that let visitors watch full length streaming television episodes, someone leaves a comment pointing out that the service only works in the US. That's generally because these web sites don't have the distribution rights (and advertising deals) needed to stream these programs in other countries -- even countries that are as geographically close to the US as Canada.
But Canada's CTV Network has now launched its own streaming TV section. The selection of videos isn't nearly as rich as what you'll find from Hulu. But CTV does air a number of popular programs in Canada and many of them are available online including Mad Men, Fringe, The Daily Show, and The Colbert Report.
Videos are shown with limited advertisements, and you can watch in full screen. As you'd expect, the site only works if you're in Canada (or using a proxy network to make it appear as if you are). But blogger Dale Dietrech took the service for a spin and assures us that it works.

CTV's services has been around for a long time (at least a year); Global TV and CBC also have video. The problem is that they're full episodes so when you link to clips we have to watch the full episode on their crappy, slow sites to find the clip. Hulu is in talks to come to Canada and it can't come soon enough.
The CBC also had an article on this just yesterday: http://www.cbc.ca/arts/story/2009/04/27/tech-090427-online-video.html

To complement that which wader posted above, I would note that the CTV service has actually been around since 2006 -- you're only 3 years late on the announcement!
It should be noted that CBC also offers a free live stream (i.e., I can watch Hockey Night in Canada on my computer without any sort of real delay).

Comedy Network and Discovery Channel have also had the exact same setup for a few years now.

nothing new, but one big difference from hulu, it sucks! doesn't work in some browser/os configurations, quality is terrible, and, depending on the time of day/show, can be extremely slow. I still want hulu in Canada

Wow, I never realised how bad ctv's programming was until I saw that the only shows out of that entire list that I would even consider watching are "two and a half men" and "comedy now".

Unfortunately CTV is converting all their digital streaming to Silverlight, meaning it doesn't work on Google Chrome and will never work on PS3, unlike Hulu.

Guys, you have taught me well. I have just written a new post discussing the Global offerings. You can read it here:

Stay tuned. I'll be writing a post shortly on how to use Hotspot Shield in Canada to access Hulu. It's pretty easy.
