With Firefox 3.5 set to emerge from beta soon, the folks at Mozilla are
setting goals for Firefox 3.6. One of the most exciting changes scheduled for that release is the ability to install and activate themes and add-ons without restarting the browser. Sort of. Right now the goal is to develop support for "light" themes and "light" add-ons. It's not entirely clear what that means, but odds are you won't be able to install and activate
every Firefox extension without a restart in Firefox 3.6. But it's a start.
Also on deck are features and improvements including:
- Performance improvements including faster browser startup times, and improved responsiveness
- Ability to create, save, and restore groups of tabs
- Improved interface for file uploading
- Ability to turn web pages into desktop apps (as you can do with Mozilla Prism or Google Chrome)
- New default theme for Windows that uses Aero Glass

They haven't even released version 3.5 yet and I am already foaming at the mouth for 3.6!! lol One of the only missing things then would be Tab isolation!!! So only the tab will crash not all of Firefox.

Worst MS-Paint job ever

I use my pen drive which has Firefox Portable on it at work, and the improved startup times would definitely help. It usually takes well over a minute for FF to load, and I don't even have that many add-ons. Just Adblock, Foxmarks and a theme

Note that there has actually been an about:config item that lets you apply a theme without restarting for a while, but it does not always work properly which is why a restart is generally required. I think by lightweight themes they might be talking about the Personas thing, and I would not be surprised if by lightweight addons they meant something like Greasemonkey scripts.

Adding Aero glass to the default theme is a really good idea. I'm currently using the glasser add-on which gives the same effect and it looks so much nicer.
I would also expect implementation of some of the new Windows 7 APIs by then as well (tab thumbnails, progress bar in task button, etc.)

I don't see what the big deal about a restart is. Firefox is such a memory hog that I can't run it for more than 3-4 hours without restarting it just to make it usable again.

A minute? If it's taking a minute to start Firefox, then something's wrong. It shouldn't take more than 10 seconds, and that's if you're running dozens of add-ons.
I just don't see what the big deal is. It's not like rebooting the entire computer. I have a button on my FF toolbar that says "restart Firefox." I click it about once an hour, and FF restarts in just a few seconds, complete with all the tabs I had open.
But "tab isolation" is a really good idea. Much more useful than non-restarting. If a tab crashes, it should crash by itself.
