Facebook users hate the redesign, but does it matter?

I'm with Eric Eldon at VentureBeat on this one: users don't always know what they want, and a lot of people have negative attitudes toward having to relearn a site they were already very familiar with. When the dust clears a little bit, and folks have had a chance to test-drive the site a bit, then Facebook might have to start listening to constructive criticism. For right now, they should -- and will, more than likely -- work out any kinks in the new design, but give it some time to win people over.
Download Squad readers, what do you think? Do initial user reactions to the new design matter? Should Facebook scrap it, or give it a chance, and why? Vote in our poll, or leave a comment if you have more to say.

Quite frankly,
who cares?
Facebook's design is ultimately up to its design team.
And to those saying its too much like Twitter....they're both social networking sites. Even MySpace now has a status feed.

I agree with Souveys. I mind the new layout mainly because they took some functions away that I use regularly (as part of my job): the ads manager and the page manager. I work for a tv production company so I help manage a couple of the tv show pages, and now I have to click 4 times to get to my page managing "dashboard" (at first I couldn't even find it!) rather than just the one click from the old "home page". Of course, now I've bookmarked the dashboard page so I don't have to click 4 times, but still...it's the principle!

Look, people complained about the newsfeeds (myself included) when it came out, and look how many people use that now. People are naturally resistant to change. Besides, as with most polls, the disgruntles are the only one's voting. Give it a chance I say. And then after sufficient feedback has been made, Facebook should listen and make the necessary interface changes.

I loved the previous "new" facebook, almost immediately, but I find the new one irritating. Everything got oversimplified. The design is not so terrible, but it's certainly not better. My main thing is the function, though. I can't ignore specific applications in the feed and I can't kill individual highlights. If I could do that then it would probably be alright.

Is there any reason to completely abandon the old version? Why can't people choose? Wasn't that one of the points of CSS?

It's the apps appearing in the feed that bug me. I could live with the rest.

Honestly, the redesign is NOT bad. It is a twitter clone, but it is so much more. Plus this is Facebook. You use Twitter for people you don't know. Facebook is for people you do. Honestly? I don't understand why it's that big of a deal. People that are afraid of change make me angry.

It matters. It's not the redesign people dislike. A lot of previous functionality and information prioritization has been lost. I left myspace because it wasn't as functional as facebook and I loved the way the old facebook worked. Now it feels as ineffectual as myspace. I think the designers need to stop trying to immitate other social networking sites and focus on their own strengths. I know a lot of my friends are on their a lot less since the redesign. It's also hard to see what people are up to. With the new layout it's more difficult to see status updates compared to photo comments or wall messages, everything looks the same. It's just NOT as functional and definitely much, much slower than before.
