Windows Movie Maker 2.6 available for Vista, Windows 7

Those of you who have run a recent Windows Live installation may have seen Windows Live Movie Maker. It's an attractive update, and a very simple way to put put together home video on your Windows computer. It does, however, lack some features users of good old Windows Movie Maker enjoyed.
If you've been waiting for an updated version to appear, you're in luck.
Microsoft has made version 2.6 of Movie Maker available for download, and it runs on both Windows Vista and Windows 7. While advanced users are likely using a more sophisticated video editing program, there's no denying that Movie Maker is an excellent, full-featured option for the average home user.

Does this one also lack HD options?

The Vista version didn't lack HD options.

What he means is, does this support AVCHD. The high def encoding that HD Camera's use. Movie Maker for Vista does not support this format, so if you want to easily edit HD video, you have to turn to other software.

Actually when I said "Does this one also lack HD options?" I was comparing it to the Live Movie Maker, which lacks HD export options. So essentially this is just the Windows Movie Maker that was included in XP? No HD features?

Worse. It's basically the XP version with some of it's features stripped out; in other words this sucks. This will run on XP if you copy the files over, so I thought cool a free upgrade. Found out it was actually a downgrade. Very lame Microsoft.

How is this better than the WMM that shipped with Vista? I think this is only good for Win7 users who don't get WMM installed with the OS.

It's actually worse than the version in XP. I don't know what they were thinking.

"Movie Maker 2.6 is for Windows Vista users whose computer cannot run the Vista version of Movie Maker"
That with the 2007 release date should answer all questions above ;)

when I try to run this on Windows 7 I get "Windows Movie Maker cannot be used because the required audio hardware cannot be found on your computer." How do I fix this.

what would be a good video editing tool to make Movies that can playback in DVD Players. I already have ULead but isn't getting the job done for me. May be some one could help me out by suggesting other editing tools.
Thanx.

I'm shooting 1980x1080 HD with my Canon 5d MKII. Is WMM a program that I can use to edit files produced by this camera? Also, does it have the capability of reducing the size of the files so they can be published on the web? Thanks for your help..............

Does anyone know why some versions of the "Windows Movie Maker" have the option to "Publish to DVD" but some don't? I downloaded the WMM 2.6 and it still does not has that option. I have Windows Vista Home Basic. Thank you.

I heard that MM2.6 would run with Windows 7. I downloaded it and spent an hour or so creating a movie clip with quite a lot of edits. When I tried to save it to my computer it just wouldn't save no matter what I tried. I used to use MM to make videos like this all the time on my old computer with XP. MM did used to crash a lot back then when I did a lot of edits but I never had trouble saving a movie before. Anyone else have this problem with Windows 7 or know how to fix it?

Oops! Forget all that...it works fine now! The problem was that the WMV file I was using had been converted with a new file converter I had just downloaded. When I checked I was surprised to discover that the only WMV file format used by this 5 star rated converter was actually WMV2!(?) After converting the file to WMV7 with another converter my re-edited movie saved just fine. Traps for new players.
