Fresh install of XP, now what?
I had the mothership send me a Dell Latitude so I can finally quit angering Parallels on my Mac (which is down to about 2GB of HD space anyway), and it's about as clean an install as any "corporate" computer will get. For example, since our parent company is publicly traded, the rules insist AV software be included. I'm running GuardianEdge for disk encryption (so those Yahoos don't steal my sekrits), McAfee for AV, PowerDVD and Office 2003. The machine came pre-installed with the latest AOL client (naturally -- and it's really quite useful if you work here) but also with Firefox, which is nice. I had to manually install Flash, which shows how stripped-down the machine is.So now I'm staring at a pretty clean machine, all things considered. What are the top 3 things you readers would suggest I install next?

These may have been mentioned already but this is my top 3 list (the good part - all are free):
1. emerge desktop (keep that desktop clean - just right click to
bring up the menus and best of all, freak out the guys in IT when
they can't find your start menu
2. xplorer2 (zabkat.com - get rid of windows explorer - dual pain
file browsing and too many features to list)
3. Virtual Box (so you can play with other OS's - Linux anyone)

#1. (Your favorite Partition Manager software)
#2. (Your favorite Disk Defragmentation software)
#3. (Your favorite Drive Imaging software)*
... then, create a system partition and storage partition, defragment
your system partition, and create a drive image (and copy it to a DVD
or USB drive for safe keeping). Afterwards, install all your favorite
media, productivity and security software, then repeat the above
process.
*If you don't know why this is important, Google it. Now.

It is a corporate laptop, why are you telling him to install Windows 7?
And you cant "upgrade" to 7 from xp. You would have to do a fresh install.
