Microsoft Office 14 screenshots leaked
Someone get a mop, the leaks are everywhere.
Several screenshots of Microsoft Office 14 - which is currently in alpha testing- have been leaked by Russian site Wzor. Beta versions are scheduled to appear sometime in May with the full release slated for the end of 2009.
The screenshots show a bevy of applications, including Access, Excel, Groove, InfoPath, InterConnect, OneNote, Outlook, PowerPoint, Project, Publisher, SharePoint Designer, Vizio, and Word. Server components were also released to some customers for alpha testing last week.
It looks as though the UI will remain similar to Office 2007's. As for the changes under the hood, the rest of us will have to wait. At least for a little while.

What I am really waiting for is the end (or, at least, conversion) of some of these discrete applications. I'm not saying Microsoft can't or shouldn't sell them separately. However, if I am buying Microsoft Office as a package, then I would like to be able to create a fiel/document where each page is whatever I want it to be. Each page would be a tab (like in an Excel workbook), but could be a Word doc, or an Excel spreadsheet, or a Visio chart, or something from Publisher. All of this could be opened from the same file. It cannot really be a memory issue because multiple Office applications open at once right now. You could also use the tabs if you were just creating a file/document of only one type. For example, a Word document could have multiple tabs allowing you to access different sections/chapters of the document with just one click. (I haven't used Lotus WordPro in years, but it had this functionality.)

Maybe I'm missing something, but why is it called Office 14?
ChrisJan 15th 2009 7:36PM
The 2007 version was version 12, and Microsoft is too superstitious to create an Office 13.

Because they released Windows 7 and office is the 2nd best selling product.
So, 7 x 2 = 14. Got it??

Ummm.... Office 2000 was Office 10, Office XP (2002) was Office 11, and Office 2003 was Office 12, so Office 2007 was Office 13. That is why the next one is Office 14.

@Pheonix
Actually Office 07 was Office 12. They're skipping 13 because it could piss people off, like skipping the 13th floor of a building.

That's so crazy it's gotta be true...
just like elevators.
PeterJan 15th 2009 9:07PM
They have publicly stated that. Also, lots of people wouldn't buy a product that was version number 13.
cammerv8Jan 15th 2009 11:32PM
i would!!!

@Lee Mathews:
The title should say "screenshots" instead of "screeshots".
Lee MathewsJan 15th 2009 8:45PM
I was going to include it, but I'm too superstitious to put n's in my titles...
But seriously, nice catch...fixed!

Are you kidding me? I just bought Office 2007 for $120, and a new version is coming out this year! Grrrrrrrr.......
PeterJan 15th 2009 9:00PM
Well you shouldn't have waited 2 years to buy it. It's not like Office 2007 came out 2 months ago.

Why worry? I'm still running a cracked copy of Office 2000 on all my PCs. For the vast majority of users there haven't been that many updates to justify the expense. You'll still be able to create a Word doc or spreadsheet for years to come.....

Sucks dude.
Ever tried OpenOffice.org? It's free. I use it to write term papers frequently and am very pleased with its functionality. And did I mention it's free?
LOL
RocketboyJan 15th 2009 10:15PM
Maybe they'll have an option to turn off Ribbons.
But I'm not holding my breath.
AalaapJan 16th 2009 1:21AM
Visio, not Vizio
CurtJan 16th 2009 7:35AM
Uhhhh....here is the problem with skipping version 13: as any triskaidekaphobic person will tell you you'll have to skip version 14 as well and wait for 15 as 14 "is really" 13 since they skipped it. Trust me - I have a friend who won't stay on hotel floor 14 if the hotel skipped 13 as he "knows" its really 13.......

So I wonder if MP4 or video podcast embedding would be too much to ask for this one? That would make some presentations so much easier without having to convert them to a Redmond-blessed format first.
