Microsoft servers taking a beating as Win7 downloaders descend
If you're anxious to get your hands on the official Windows 7 beta from Microsoft today, you're going to have to be patient. Since early this morning the company's web servers have been struggling to manage the massive influx of web traffic.
For the past hour and a half both the main Microsoft site and the Windows Team Blog have been extremely slow or totally unreachable.
The situation makes me wonder:

- When will there be a shift to P2P distribution for major software releases like this? It seems to work fairly well for the hundreds of Linux distributions available, even the big names like Ubuntu and OpenSUSE.
- Has Microsoft already started using P2P? Leaks of Windows 7 have been all over the place since build 6801, and there's certainly no reason that an OS that is set to shut itself down on August 1st couldn't have been uploaded to torrent trackers intentionally.

Sure as hell feels like spam, since you merely need to put in a CD to install an OS.
Go google how to install Win7 from a flash drive, and then you can have a bootable flash drive with it on there, and to upgrade the image just delete the files and copy the new ones over from within the new ISO file (with winrar or 7zip).
Really people...I've had Win7 installed for a few weeks now, and honestly its the new XP. I hated vista, and while you still get the UAC "Are you sure....?" prompts, it happens alot less and makes you feel more secure than annoyed.
Just...like go for it. Just do it. Do it. Do it. :)

Nope, the front page still says "Check back the afternoon of January 9th for the download."
It's just a bunch of people who thought the dl would be up now, who get on only to find it's not there. Perhaps most of them will give up and just quit by the time it's live.

This sure feels like Windows 7 is being over hyped. I'm sure it's an improvement over what Vista did, but still this is kinda getting out of hand just for a new build on the Vista kernel. I fear for people over hyping it, then the media coming down on it like Vista, and it'll be a Vista repeat all over.

I agree on being able to download the iso via p2p, but it wouldn't help their servers, they'd still be hammered with key requests.
Hypothetically speaking, if I already had the 7000 build iso, even have it installed, I'd still need to get a key. I may even be using Windows 7 to get it.

I downloaded Windows 7 yesterday from Rapid Share (there are 24-100MB RAR files). I used their activation patch to get it up and running. You can also use an old Vista RTM cd-key or one from Windows 2008 Server RTM.

this is ridiculous. how the hell do u get a key. i dont see anything on their stupid page that show u how to register for the beta. does this happen after u try and install this? and what happens to the original o.s. like will it give me the option to load vista or windows 7?
