Vista to Windows 7 upgrade date and details revealed
For everyone wanting a free upgrade to Windows 7, Microsoft finally has an answer. Unfortunately, it probably isn't the answer you wanted to hear.Starting on July 1, 2009 any new systems purchased will be eligible for the no-charge update. In addition to purchasing the PC after that date, there are three more rules:
- End users must purchase a new PC that is pre-installed with an eligible Windows Vista OS. Retail boxed Vista versions likely won't qualify.
- Your computer must have a valid Windows Vista COA attached.
- The only Windows Vista® versions eligible for the program are Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate. Vista basic users are out of luck.
Participation in the program is optional, so it's ultimately up to the OEM that builds your system to allow the upgrade. In all fairness, this has been the case with every other Windows upgrade -- and almost all vendors participate.
With news like this, I'd fully expect to see the Windows 7 beta torrent become even more popular.

I love how windows users want it for free, yet an Apple fan will pay for OS X upgrades over and over and over. Bugs and crashes in X? Hey, it's all ok.
Look, if you don't like it you don't have to buy it. You can stick with Vista or stick with XP if you decided not to move forward there either. Besides, it will keep your old laser discs company along with you old leaded burning ford car.

If Microsoft made their updates as cheap as OSX, then heck yes, I'm sure we wouldn't complain nearly as much. But paying $500 for the full version of Vista-Ultimate-Super-Duper, only to have them turn around and put out a new version because even they new it was crap... well, seems to me that a lot of people have a lot to complain about.

Well after all the HYPE. I installed W7 and I can say it looks and feels like KDE and Vista mixed.Ran several test and I could only see W7 beat out my Vista when tranferring files.WOW a whole 2.6 sec. HMMM I'm not amused.
Most of it is still just eye candy.
Sorry,I like Windows but give me a break.
P.S.Before a Mac fan attacks. I've never seen Mac users receive free betas. So don't start about how better they are.

Being honest, the more people complain about having to upgrade the more i wonder what kinda dream world they think they are in. Correct me if im wrong but didn't we pay for windows 95(XP) then get 98(Vista) only to end up having to get 98SE(win7) to fix the problems and make it better?
I know its not fair for us to have to spend money...But am i the only one who thinks that the reason windows 7 is so dam good is because of vista...I mean hell if you have a crap product and everyone says so your gonna try way way harder to get it out faster and better and look at windows 7 i mean i installed it on a way old computer and i had bluetooth drivers without being connected to the net that my freaking xp and vista still cant get even with the net....Lets just be greatful they are finally back on the ball and pay now so we can have a better 7SP2
dmhoo29Jan 12th 2009 2:53AM
Well I never paid for 95,98,98SE,or ME(joke). It came preinstalled. MS should have taken their time with Vista. They were in a hurry for release because of the new MAC OS coming out. They should have put all their hard earned time into making Vista even better.Instead they're now anxious to get W7 out due to OSX Snow Leopard release.
Does no one see what's happening? It is called making money.

Wait a second! Those of us who actually had went ahead and bit the bullet and purchased Vista against our better judgment , submitted error reports, and generally lived with the nightmare known as Vista, hoping the whole time that Microsoft will eventually get it together and fix it are being left high and dry, while those that have sat on the fence and basically done nothing to help are going to get a free ride?!?! Without us, Microsoft would never known how badly Vista was broken. If they don't at least provide the fixes in SP2 that Windows 7 users will get, they're going to have a major lawsuit on their hands.

regarding the first post:
You can boot from XP upgrade disks. the installer will eject the xp upgrade disk, and ask you to insert the install disk for the version of windows you are upgrading, which must be a version eligible for upgrade. I haven't tried it with vista upgrade disks (as I have never performed a vista "upgrade"), but I would assume there is a similar mechanism.
note: this might not be the case for OEM upgrade disks (i.e. ones you would get from dell, hp, ibm, etc.).

So being whiny is a female quality? News to me.

Okay lets get one think straight, didn't Vista come out in like 06 or 07? That's ages ago in terms of software dev. So if your one of the scared crowd that didn't buy Vista because you had heard all these bad rumors about it bricking your machine or turning your flat-bed paralell port scanner into a paper weight then its your OWN fault you waited 2-3 years after the release to purchase a copy. Kinda along the same lines of people buying XP when Vista is already on the market. Or for the mac people its like have OS 9 and buying 10.4 when 10.5 is on the market and they are about to release 10.6 or whatever, which yes is really just Service Packs. It just annoys me about how people beleive it is the companies fault that because they just bought a "older" product (as compared to "dirt old" with XP) that they should be entitled to a upgrade because MS didn't wait 5-8 years before releasing a new OS.

Oh on another note, I've personnaly NEVER run into troubles with Vista besides a HD Audio driver that didn't work in XP to begin with. I might not be doing the major data-crunching that everybody else using Vista that has problems might, but then again I've never had any real problems with it in a corp. enviroment either. The only time I've seen other people have problems is when they are trying to use hardware or software that either A. Never worked in XP to begin with or B. Worked in XP but the workarounds are no longer applicable/available for Vista.

Windows 7 runs alot better then Vista ever did. So, yes I think it is wrong to charge people to fix Microsofts problem and yes Microsoft should take the loss with a grain of sand ,after all it is Microsoft that rushed Vista on the market. Heck I am pissed that my daughter $900 laptop has Vista that was preinstalled from store and it says BETA! They charged people for BETA..I have used Linux for years and Kubuntu beats Vista all around and linux in general has come along way in combatatility. Windows 7 is a good system from what I've seen so far it runs much faster that Vista. Kubuntu, linux is still a very good Windows alternative for those that have a brain/not needing to be spoon fed. Linux is way more secure then Windows and Mac. I never, never had any malware, virus or spyware on any of my Linux systems. I even run Windows games and applacations in Linux and printers and suck work as they should. Yes, setup of some applacations are not a 123 step but a small price for security. Sorry but most Windows users are lazy uninformed people that should not cry when you get hacked/backdoored. If you must soley run Windows then Windows 7 is a good choice to update to but I would,as I do run duel boot with Linux cause when Windows goes down, and it will I can always get my files using old fateful LINUX.
ps.I do relize Linux is not 100% free of attack
but much much less then Windows users ever were.
pps.I highly recommmend all Vista users to up grade to
Windows 7 as soon as you can. Also get on your phone and complain how
you feel about paying for Bill Gates error and maybe next time you
are about to lose your job for a error of equal damages Mr. Bill Gates
will stand up and be a man and take the heat for you and still cut you a check.

I've been a Windows user for at least 15years. I bought a new PC last year w/Vista pre-installed.
After this b/s, my next laptop is going to be an Apple!!!
Who is with me????
IanMar 13th 2009 12:44AM
I dunno about all you but i haven't had many problems with vista at all.. I had just as many with XP, im sorry you people cannot adapt to new things.. but seriously.. just because you buy a car one year and a new one comes out the next doesnt mean your entitled to the next one are you? Quit crying and get over it. Go get a Mac of your so angry about windows.
