Two utilities for taking simple screenshots in Windows
Greenshot is a light weight screen capture utility for Windows that comes as a small executable file (no installation required). Just fire up the program and a little green frog icon will show up in your system tray. Right click on the icon and you'll see options to capture a window, the full screen, or a region. Once you capture an image, the Greenshot Image Editor will open up, allowing you to annotate the image with text and drawings.
Screen Capturer is a somewhat heavier duty utility which does require an installation. But you can choose to capture images to the Windows clipboard or save images as BMP, JPG, GIF, PNG, or TIFF formats. You can also capture videos as Windows Media Video animations.
Both programs are free, although Screen Capturer does require you to submit your email address for a registration code. And both applications let you use keyboard shortcuts to grab screenshots.

Have you checked out "Snipping Tool"? It comes with Windows Vista, check Start Menu > Accessories, it's light weight but still offers great and easy to use features.

I use ZScreen - great program, which became much more useful after I figured out it was putting the imageshack links to the clipboard
Still, I'm always looking for good new portable apps, so this may be worth a look.

Don't forget Screenshot Captor by Donation Coder. It'll even let you edit your annotations even after you've saved the edited image.

Lightscreen Portable is what I use. It's a lot smaller than these here.

My favorite is Jing. (www.jingproject.com). Whenever I take a screenshot, I have the intention of sending it to someone. Jing automates the whole process of capturing, uploading, and copying to clipboard.

I have been doing that for years, I am still waiting for the monitor to print out my screens though. Anyone know where I put the paper? :D

I love Picasa 3 for screen capturing....best photo management software with basic edit tools and also able to take screen shots

we use at work snagit. I love it.
-many options including scrolling window!
(I work with active directory and other mmc consoles. I simply have to double click columns and it will scroll horizontally and vertically to capture the inside of that box . )
it can email / msn / ftp / copy to clipboard / automatically save to file .. and much more! + it comes with a "powerful" editor to add arrows and stamps and the works ...
well worth it's 30-50$ price tag!

Been using HoverSnap 0.8 since always (http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm). Everything you need in 605KB.

I am looking for a freeware solution that easily captures scrolling screens. FastStone does it, but you have to manually scroll there with seems useless to me as I suppose everybody wants the whole screen and can crop the image afterwards. Any suggestions?

Snaggit allows you to make screencaps from pages wich have to be scrolled
