And thus the situation we're in now, where IE8 has almost as many compatibility modes as vista has "skews." Perfect Acid3 compliance is not the end all, but comparing IE's compliance with Firefox's is just insulting. People who write off web standards as irrelevant are a liability to the craft.

Because the Acid3 test was built specifically to fail on the most popular browsers in order to see marked improvement in the future. Add that to the fact Acid3 only came out 8 months ago, when Gecko was at 52/100 and Trident was at 14/100.
Now they're 93/100 and 21/100 respectively. Okay so IE isn't improving that much, but Firefox is well on its way.

The score isn't very relavent, the tests stop as soon as one case fails, so it 20/100 doesn't mean you failed 80 tests, it just means the 21st one failed as opposed to a later one.

The first test the nightly build of Firefox fails is test 70 and it scores 97/100. So yes the number is valid, also the visual is quite important as well, there's a lot of uncounted tests through visual behavior which IE fails pretty dramatically.

Finally, Opera getting some real credit, now if only someone would make a web developers toolbar that was on par with the one for FF we'd have the perfect browser!

It actually does have the Dragonfly developer tool which is a pretty nice rip-off of Firebug (Tools->Advanced->Developer Tools). Just another one of the nice Opera features that gets quietly added in a point release and then fails to get promoted at all thereafter.
Opera is a good choice to do initial development in since it is the most compliant with standards. First you code it right. Then you apply bug fixes for FF, IE, etc.

I thought it was common knowledge that not all browsers are going to support standards 100% at the same time and that Internet Explorer has always been behind on standards.
Anyone who has heard of IE8 should know that Internet Explorer is working towards standards as we speak and by Opera pushing so hard, it gives us a browser a head of the pack. WebKit is also right up there with Opera as well. ;)

I tried Opera a while back and found the browser to be a little clunky and the layout somewhat confusing. Tab positions were confusing and the way they cluttered the tabs row was ugly too.
The reason I tried it in the first place was to see all that standards compliance in action. Unfortunately, nearly all webpages are designed with IE in mind which pretty much negates the "standards compliance in action" phrase. So in the end I reverted to Firefox.
Firefox gained market share because of people having security concerns while using the internet. However people thinking of migrating to Opera will have Opera UI discomfort and IE compliance concerns. Not a seller for Opera!
The point I am trying to make is that Opera needs to get inline with all the other browsers in terms of usability and simplicity and also have something more to offer for people who don't get the issue of standards because they constitute the bulk of people online.

I am a long time Opera user (10+ years). The Opera team has been crowing about it strict compliance to web standards for years. Meanwhile, Opera will not properly render some of the most popular sites on the web. Any site with lots of Java is likely to be a problem.
I would gladly trade a little standards compliance for being able to access my bank account through Opera.
I have actually tried to switch back to IE or Firefox a few times but I am addicted to Opera's speed and a few of it's features.

I don't know... I've used Opera, IE, Firefox, GreenBrowser (a wrap for IE) and quite a few others over the years and I run into a common thread.
You tell a lot of websites that you're running anything other than IE or Firefox and they start "not working". Used to be the same way with Firefox as well until it got popular enough that people started seriously complaining and they had to admit Firefox into the "Holy Sanctioned" realm at a lot of websites.
If I tell Opera to tell websites it's IE 5 or 6, everything usually works fine. It think in a lot of cases, you hit sites that are programmed to reject anything *not* IE or Firefox.

Opera addict 4+ years here.
This alpha is blazing fast.
It takes a bit of getting used to maybe like every good thing(s) out there - but once you get familiar with it. Its hard to turn your back.
Opera truly rocks.
