10GB is about all you need for a windows XP install. Everything else should be on a different partition anyway

Why? You'd have to reinstall all apps and games if you reinstall windows.
Besides people thought that 2G was enough for Win2K.
It's a nightmare trying to patch an installation these days. (Yes, I do know that they should have upgraded it, but...)
