Barack Obama - President 2.0?
First the Obama campaign was sending out text messages to the masses and that whole thing came up about John McCain not using email. Obama was campaigning for those of us who are into the web. He appealed to our technology.
It appears he is going to keep it up. There are Presidential baby photos on the web. And, the President-elect is on flickr. He has released an entire set of election night photos of his family awaiting results in their hotel room. I wonder what will be next.
The Obamas certainly seem willing to let us have glimpses of their world. And they understand how to reach out on the web. No wonder someone took the time to make a flash game for Obama. Let's hope it continues. Maybe there will be a presidential blog.

Now, the president will have more important things to do than read a blog, but even the president gets time off at the end of the day. It's not as if he has to liveblog his daily life, posting updates every fifteen minutes.
MarkNov 7th 2008 10:04PM
I disagree with you. I think him blogging would help him connect with the people.
He doesn't need to blog every day, or every week even, but blogging can be of great benefit. It can help people get involved in politics, because right now, there is a great disconnection between government and the people, and it is because people are so busy with day to day work and life.
The Internet and computer technology have caused this, and now it will help fix it. Before, people could lobby for their causes, now it is mostly corporations who have big budgets to have lobbyists in Washington working full time. How is an individual person supposed to compete with that?! Imagine if the President had a blog, where everyone in the country could read and comment. People could actually lobby for changes they want and agree with. Opinions could be heard without people having to completely change their schedule. The government would be back in the hands of the people, just how it should be.
This blog wont completely fix it, but as part of the government framework, it could definitely make a difference.
It is time the people take back the government, and I think Obama knows exactly what he is doing.
Of course, he hasn't even been inaugurated yet, and this is all speculation on how he could use his blog.

A Presidential Blog? Uh...yeah...it's called www.whitehouse.gov and there is a weekly radio address with transcript...and a press secretary...
WRT www.change.gov, that's nothing more than an electronic trial balloon launch pad. You think Slashdot, KOS, Free Republic, etc. have huge amounts of worthless babble? Any Presidential blog would be overloaded quickly.
There is a reason people in positions of authority and power have layers of filtering for information. They have the same 24 hours per day as anyone else. Signal is important, noise is not.
Fred ThompsonNov 7th 2008 11:36PM
from the "America Serves" portion of www.change.gov:
"all college students who conduct 100 hours of community service receive a universal and fully refundable tax credit ensuring that the first $4,000 of their college education is completely free."
Hmmm...how, exactly, is PAYING students $40 per hour volunteer work?
And...what about businesses that will perform these tasks? $40 per hour? Hmm...what is the minimum wage? $40 per hour is $80,000 per year raw, the equivalent of well over $100,000 per year if you include the income tax exemption.
Notice there is nothing for High School students who "volunteer".
How about students WORK at MARKET PRICES so they actually learn the value of money? Why should the federal government confiscate money from actual workers to pay non-union, non-accredited children to perform small amounts of work?
I've changed my mind about a Presidential Blog. Go right ahead, spill the beans about all the stupid things they plan to do.

Didn't he tell the masses that kids these days need to "stop playing their Gameboys and get out" and he said this in uh earlier this year I believe... Gameboys were like...4 years ago?
Fred ThompsonNov 8th 2008 11:30PM
No, Gameboys are 1989...
However, this is one of my favorite points. Besides the myth of young voters (demographics and numbers in thei election were the same regarding who voted and who did not), the "youth" appeal is very short-lived. Bill Clinton was on MTV (when it was cool) and lots of college kids were excited though very few voted. Four years later (an eternity in student time) Bill Clinton was another adult who lied to them and was one of "them" not "us." Fortunately for him, his opponent was the less-than-vibrant Bob Dole. Obama's got himself in a corner against that demographic given he's promised to absolve college debts. With whose money? In the next Presidential election, he'll be the "establishment" and tribe theory makes him the target, not the Pied Piper. Remember Al Gore's hype about running net cables in schools? Four years later that was incredibly out of touch because WiFi was so much more possible. He'll also have four years of LOTS of web-based documentation of actual actions and results.

It doesn't matter if "gameboy" is 4 years old, he was addressing people who wouldn't know a DS from a remote control, so that he used that term doesn't mean much.
The message stays the same, and he was damn right about it.

I live in a small town outside of Los Angeles. I walk at night. One night during the final few days before the election while I was taking my walk, I began to notice families gathered in front of the television watching the Obama channel. At first I was just like...OK people are getting the information and figuring out who to vote for...I didn't think anything was really weird, but I walk every night, AND EVERY NIGHT IN THE SMALL TOWN THE FAMILIES CONTINUED TO WATCH...HOME AFTER HOME STARING BLANKLY INTO THE TELEVISION SCREEN. ONE NIGHT OUT CURIOSITY I CREPT SLOWLY CLOSER TO ONE OF THE HOMES ONLY TO HEAR THE LOW DRONING VOICE THE MAN CALLED OBAMA. I WATCHED IN HORROR AS THE EYES IN THEIR HEADS ROLLED BACK TO WHITE AND DROOL BEGAN TO PUDDLE IN THEIR LAPS. I RAN AS FAST AS I COULD AND HIT THE DOOR OF MY HOUSE IN FULL STRIDE ONLY TO DISCOVER MY OWN FAMILY CAUGHT UP IN THE HORRIFYING HYPNOTIC TRANCE. MY WIFE KEPT SAYING OVER AND OVER ...OBAMA OBAMA OBAMA. I woke up days later to find that my worst nightmares had actually come true. THEY ACTUALLY VOTED HIM INTO OFFICE. NOW EVERYDAY IS A NIGHTMARE, AND NOW I HAVE HEARD A RUMOR THAT THE GAYS ARE COMMING. THEY ARE CARRYING LONG SPEARS AND KNIVES AND WEARING COMFORTABLE WALKING SHOES, THEY HAVE SWORN TO BURN DOWN EVERY HOUSE WITH UGLY LANDSCAPING. I KNOW MY ONLY HOPE IS TO REDECORATE MY LIVING ROOM WITH JUST THE RIGHT COLOR PAINT, I MIGHT CONFUSE THEM INTO LEAVING ME ALONE....OH GOD HELP US ALLL......

That is what our President needs to do.

Obama won as much because he was a vision of the future as anything else. His ability to relate from inclusiveness is not a political strategy it's part of the fabric of his life. The newer generations are all about that...they see much less race than does the baby boomer generation who are still holding on to power like a baby at a teat. Obama reached out tech saavy and user friendly talking about issues, possibilities, and what our path might be...and McCain unfortunately, since the very definition of 'conservative' is..."resistant to change" was caught it the box of not being progressive enough for the country. Yes, he was saddled with Bush, however, in his desire to be elected, he danced back and forth willingly with that nightmare. As for Sarah palin....if there was ever a person who was SOOOOO unright for the potential step in to the president if McCain went down it was her. She claims to have 'executive experience' as Gov. but her own states highly conservative newspaper deemed her unqualified. Let alone an archaic body of ignorance that she attempted to pass off as 'folksy"....the last straw for me was watching one of her rallies where people from the crowd shouted "kill Obama" and she did NOT take the crowd to task for that sentiment. Anyone who would let that comment fly about a potential leader in our country does NOT NOW nor Ever deserve the mantle of leader.

Your post is pure garbage and untruth (seems there is a filter on the word l--r, which is the most appropriate for your post.)
Demographics of voter turnout for 2008 are almost identical to 2004.
Computer networking is hardly a "youth-only" culture.
The overwhelming majority of racial comments came from the Democrats who attempted to define "racism" as any criticism or rejection of Obama.
Conservative, like the overwhelming majority of English words has many definitions. Political conservatism, in the American vernacular, means limited government and maximum personal freedom. Your statement of definition is a Dowdification. Resistance to "change for the sake of change" (all that Obama has stated other than repackaged FDR, LBJ and Carter ideas) is wise. There is no virtue in being blindly cavalier with the lives and resources of other people. Change, in and off itself, is not a virtue.
Obama most certainly did not discuss issues. He refused to have proper town hall debates and proclaimed anything which questioned/threatened his as being a "distraction" or "racist." McCain was not willing to fight on principles which is why he lost. Obama did not gain huge demographics other than disgruntled conservatives and a higher-then-usual percentage of single women.
The word "progressive", as used in the American vernacular, is completely identical to "liberal." The term "Progressive" was used in the early 20th Century until the political left had so tarnished it that they moved to "liberal." Recently, they've moved back to "progressive" because "liberal" has been just as tarnished by the actions of the political left.
Newspapers are not sentient creatures. Newspapers publish many opinions. Your comment has no citation. It's worthless.
There was one "reporter" who claimed to have heard a shout of, "kill him" in reference to Obama. The 20-odd Secret Service people on site, all other law enforcement and security present and all authorities found no evidence to support the claim. The "reporter" wasn't charged. 5 will get you 10 he is hiding behind "protecting his source" to avoid prosecution. Your statement that you saw such a rally is complete and utter falsehood.

..oh excuse me...Mrs. Palin has at least 4-6 more years of executive and legislative experience than Obama OR Biden..she's actually been responsible for budgets..running a government both in a local and state head of state. If you count a soured stint as community organizer as having experience in foreign affairs or a state senator who NEVER showed up for a vote or a jr US senator who campaigned the whole time he was in office, holding rock concerts in Germany..telling the foreign countries how we're a screw up nation..yep..you may be right but most people with half a brain would know that wouldn't add up to a manager's job at a McDonald's..and I sure as hell wouldn't hire someone w/no experience to work in either ONE of my companies...

I really like President Elect Barack Obama's Twitter account at twitter.com/BarrackObama
It shows his lighter side.

um, you mean http://twitter.com/BarackObama
I'm pretty sure he can spell his own name right. The one you posted is a poser, and way to non-PC to be a presidential hopeful.

There's a big difference between a tech-savvy President and a tech-friendly President. CNET rated Obama a 33% on tech-friendliness. Even John McCain is more tech-friendly than Barack Obama. So while you're enjoying Obama's twits and watching his web cam you'll be paying more to do so.
Christina ClarkNov 9th 2008 7:57PM
Hi Fred - Sorry you think my post is garbage. I was merely pointing out that it seems like Obama is more tech minded (or is marketing more towards those of us that are) that presidents of the past. He used things like Twitter, flickr and text messaging as a campaign tool. Something that I am not sure has been done before.
As for the comments, well, I have no control over what opinions people have in reference to what I have said. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment though and I hope you will find other posts you agree with more here on DLS.
