eBay to ban checks and money orders in late October
There's no question that PayPal is one of the easiest ways to send and receive payments for items bought on eBay. But since the online auction site was founded, users were able to send checks or arrange payments via other methods if they were more convenient. Now all that's about to change.Starting in about a month, eBay will stop allowing users to send checks or money orders as payment for items purchased on the US version of the site. You'll only be able to pay using PayPal, ProPay, credit or debit cards (if the seller has an internet merchant account), or pay for the item upon pickup.
In January, eBay will make sure all of these options are easily available in the checkout section. For example, you'll be able to enter your credit card information to complete a purchase if a seller is authorized to accept credit cards.
eBay tried to issue a PayPal-only requirement in Australia earlier this year, but regulators ruled that the move would be anti-competitive.

Ebay is falling fast. Craigs list is getting more business because you have local listings if you want them and there is no silly bidding where some clown offers you 10.00 for something worth 1,000.00 (I have actually seen it on ebay).
This is a move by Ebay to get more money by forcing people to use paypal . Also when you accept a charge card the credit car company gets up to 3% of the sale which means you may lose money on the sale if you only get 2% more than what the item cost you.
Ebay can kiss my you know what.
That does it for me.

ebay is greedy, I have used paypal and money orders and even personal checks. I can see not accepting checks but not money orders? I think they will soon figure out a way to charge the buyers!!! They have a good thing going why on earth would they want to ruin it? I used to sell on ebay but the fees seem unfair to me so i haven't sold anything for years. I hope someone at ebay wakes up and see's this will only hurt their operations. They must be getting a kickback from paypal or they own the company is all i can figure. boycot ebay!!!!! there are severl other online auction sites.""
I work at a credit union and we are holding 3 counterfeit money orders that look just like the ones bought from Walmart. I've been in the financial industry now for over 30 years and the crooks are getting smarter everyday. I think it is a good idea to make the change.

I bet it's because Ebay is in alot of trouble assisting theft through money orders as we have been. Sellers sign and keep item and Ebay wants ntothing to do with the Federal Gov.
Ebay assists thefts 100% and BUYERS never gets a refund nor item after paying cash through a Fed Money Order. And another PLOY, to steal money, by forcing users to use Pay Pal, as they charge rediculious fee's for that use as well. And they still will steal your itemS, as I used to pay 100% Pay Pal instantly! (vttroller1623), till I lost over 2,000.00 american. Ebay not once returned any of that 2K.
My care taker was ripped off 125.00 within 2 months. And still awaiting items!!!!! 4.5 months so far???
Neither of us use Ebay any more, till VT sues for everyone in VT who was ripped off by EBAY!

Why is it that with every change, every demand, and every near incredulous stupidity that eBay is doing, that they continue to alienate eBay sellers, eBay users ?
Why do they insist in slowly destroying themselves, apart from the obvious greedy reasoning?

this just blows my mind. i understand that people send fake checks and money orders, but hackers have lots of fun on paypal. i think this is one of the stupidest decisions ebay has made. as a seller, i am going to lose business because people don't have/don't want/can't use paypal. if i was a buyer who used checks or mo's to pay for goods on ebay- i'd be pissed.
i hope ebay feels the effects of this decision. oh wait, they won't, because they'll be making up for it in seller and paypal fees.
this sucks.

You can pay by check with Paypal.
ThorSep 25th 2008 3:57PM
Pay Pal is the best way to pay for items anyway...

I can't believe this!!! I quit selling for the most part about 18 months ago, when Ebay got on me for writing "I take Western union, Cashiers Checks, Money orders or Cash" on each of my listings. Ok, so I can see it not being a good idea not sending cash thru the mail - but NONE of this should be Ebay's business! They have continually weeded out options that Ebay can't steal a cut on - even Paypal is under Ebay's umbrella!! It's too bad sellers now may have to switch from a worldwide marketbase to a little local one with Craigslist, just so they don't get ripped off blind!!! Since so many sellers are going down, I hope the Feds come down on what's left of Ebay & limits the crap out of them or shuts them down completely! Tit for Tat Ebay!!!

Ebay and PayPal are one in the same and this move is just another indication of how corporations eliminate user options to further their unbridled greed. I was alerted once that my PayPal account had been compromised and after being told that everything was caught in time, PayPal authorized the money transfer anyway! Come October I'm through with this outfit.

While I buy on eBay and only use my PayPal account or credit card and sell occassionally on eBay and only accept PayPal (it is just easier and quicker for me and worth the fee I pay) I think this is unfair. I have on occassion to bend my own rule regardig PayPal only.
I am going to check out other auction sides just to see what is out there. I think this is a big mistake on eBay's part.

I too, used to buy on eBay and enjoyed shopping there. However I only bought from sellers that took personal checks. I never minded having to wait the 7-10 days , while the check cleared 'cause I didn't want to use a credit card over the internet. I never had any trouble and only had all good ratings from my sellers. Now, however if I can only use Paypal, I, too am through with eBay buying. Think I'll either find a different auction, or just buy locally. Don't need all the hassle.

I've been using eBay for over 9 years. The problem with a Money Order or Check is that the buyer has ZERO PROTECTION if they pay with a Money Order or Check.
Many people just dont get the fact that if you buy things on eBay you are taking a RISK. The Risk is that the seller could SCAM you. Now if you pay by Credit Card, you have protection because the Card Issuer will give you a refund if you call the 1-800 number on the back of your Visa card. You can bypass the whole PayPal process and just call your card issuer directly and your protected.
Still, Many buyers CHOOSE to pay by Money Order knowing they are not protected, then they get mad when someone keeps their payment and never sends them anything.
Well, If you take a Risk, then you can loose money. I dont know what else to say. MOST SCAMS ON EBAY INVOLVE PAYING BY MONEY ORDER OR CHECK. It's the easiest way for a "seller" to keep your money and there is nothing you can really do about it.
Many scammers simply offer an item for sale on eBay, take the buyers money, and never send anything. It's SO easy to do and when the buyer pays by Money Order or Check they are simply out the money and there's really no way to get it back.
When You pay with a Credit Card, you can simply call the 1-800 number on the back of your Visa and tell them you bought something on eBay and never received it and the Card Issuer will give you a FULL REFUND.
Many people have been ripped of on eBay paying by Money Orders and Checks. eBay is being FORCED to do something to stop this and blocking Money Orders and Checks is the only way they can prevent this type of fraud.

I'm 14 and can't get a credit card. Also, to get a prepaid card you need $25! All I want is an easy, quick, don't need much money approach towards buying some records. I used money orders and was completely satisfied with how the process went. Now I just bid on something and I didn't know that I couldn't use a money order. Ebay just lost a user.

The change has to do with the U.S. Government. Senator Christopher Dodd pushed this policy in order for the government to have all electronic transactions traced and given to the IRS. Starting Jan. 1st 2010 the IRS will recieve all info on Ebay transactions of $10.000 or 200 transactions in a year. I believe they will be tracking all amounts regardless of the amount. Ebay is dead.

Ebay is losing it's customer base and sellers. They are greedy, bossy and completely against any American free trade values. As a seller for years I take all the risks when I sell something, including if I accept a check or money order. Ebay has NO BUSINESS telling me what type of payment I can accept for MY STUFF. They get their lousy fees and business when I list the item. What a bunch of crap. I am trying to find a different selling site. I have over 4,000 rating with this Crappy Bossy Dictatorship Company I am reporting them to every regulation agency I can find. Feel free to join in.

Yep this makes me mad, also. E-bay is just greedy and want to make sure they get all the profits from transactions. I have estabished, excellent feedback and have always paid with a post office money order. It is against my principles to give my banking info to ANYONE online, whether it be paypal or whomever. I will simply not be using e-bay any longer when this no money order rule goes into effect. This no money order rule was banned in Austrailia when e-bay tried to instill this rule there, So why is the United States so idiotic that this country would bend to e-bays wishes ? I know of people who have used paypal and payal is not good many times about backing up their claims that they insure items if not recieved, ect. In fact I know retailers who have not only dumped paypal but who are also dumping e-bay.
