Fuelly - finally a gas mileage social network
If you engage in small talk at the water cooler about the rising cost of gas prices, and enjoy comparing odometer readings with your friends, Fuelly could be your next favorite social network.
Built over a 2 week period in July, Fuelly was designed so users can track their mileage between fill-ups and compare notes with one another. For added convenience, Fuelly has a mobile version.
Recent activity from the site shows various users either adding a car to their garage, filling up their car, reporting on their best tank ever, or newly joining. You can befriend people based on their car type, gas mileage and odometer checks. Man, this is fun!
Hot tips such as use cruise control often and keep your tires properly inflated are among the many not so obvious suggestions to keep you more gas efficient.
As of this writing, 5,389 Fuelly users have tracked 17,203 fuel-ups in 6,006 vehicles over 4,375,464 miles of driving.

Umm, newer cars may be a little better, but cruise control is generally very BAD for your gas mileage. Instead of slowly accelerating/decelerating to make up for upcoming road conditions (hills), it simply guns it when your speed drops 5 or so km/h below your set speed.

Conversely I'd say that criuse control is generally GREAT for your milage and I simply disengage in situations where I know it will struggle. The thing about cruise control is that it is a driver assist not replacement tech ;)

Oh, sorry I didn't preface that factoid from Fuelly. The hot tip clearly says to use cruise control on steady, flat roads, especially at higher speeds.

fueleconomy.gov is better and lets users add their own too and gives you an average and lets you compare the the epa numbers. and it's official from the US gov.

Interesting site, but I prefer FuelClinic.com it has great graphs and info about your performance. It seems like each time I log on there is a new way to gauge my performance. If I want to be social, I will stick with Facebook or Myspace :)

I like that I can see real world mpg, however the info shared at Fuelly is incomplete. Unless the user is bright enough to add a description other than "My Red Civic", I have no idea if their car is manual or automatic or what engine - which affects mpg.
Fuelly lumps the Honda Civic HX with other Civics whereas the HX gets much better mpg.
FuelEconomy.gov allows you to compare mpg of known models.
There are 4 choices for a 2001 Honda Civic & a separate list for the HX.
Doing used car research I went out of my way to find a 2001 4 speed automatic Chevy Prizm with overdrive. Most are 3 speed automatics.
Was it worth the effort? Looking at shared data w/Fuelly, I can't tell if it mattered.
