How to import an export Firefox passwords
Now that you know how to import and export your Firefox extensions, you can easily configure Firefox on a new computer to work exactly like Firefox on your old computer. Well, almost exactly. OPIE can take care of your add-ons, but it doesn't export the passwords you've saved in Firefox for the dozen or so sites that you log onto every day. It turns out there's a Firefox add-on for that too.
Password Exporter adds the ability to view all of your saved passwords, and to export them in an encrypted or unencrypted file CSV or XML file. When you want to import those passwords to a different Firefox installation, just install Password Exporter again, find your file, and click the import button.
Once you install Password Exporter, you might not see it right away. It's hidden in your security settings, which you can access by clicking Tools>Options>Security. Once you're at the security screen, you should see the import/export passwords option.

do some reading, guys, it's all there at Mozilla...
no overhead
no footprint
no tertiary add-ons or plug-ins
no need to backup/restore passwords when you backup your profile(s) AND when you know what's what.
To learn, one only has to read and remember.

Yes, but add-ons can make a simpler task of it. FEBE handles it all, but the password restoration seems to be a bit more of a hassle than with this Password Exporter. I will have to try it out. FEBE is a must have add-on though.

The easiest way to backup and/or migrate all your Firefox and Thunderbird settings and data is MozBackup.

No, the easiest way is to copy/backup the contents of "C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default". That contains all user data e.i. extensions, passwords, history, session data, etc.

I prefer to use the portable version of Firefox, even in non-portable settings (i.e. my desktop machine). I can make a backup of the whole setup and copy/move it to another machine, or just run it off a USB drive if I wish.

I do too, but between my HD FireFox and the Portable Firefox on my thumb drive.
SyncBack to the rescue for the whole profile contents.
And then, if needed, the internal details from Mozilla (see my above 1st comment)
