AVG 8.0 Free released, now with protection from spyware
A few months ago, Grisoft updated its AVG anti-virus suite to version 8 and bundled linkscanning, anti-spyware, and anti-rootkit software to boot. Now Grisoft's popular freeware anti-virus application is getting some of the same features. AVG Free 8 is out, and not only does it protect your system from viruses, but you get spyware detection as well.
AVG Free 8 doesn't have all of the features you get in the commercial version of the application. There's no rootkit protection or linkscanner. And there's no email or instant messaging integration. For those features you'll have to shell out $35 or $55 for the standard or "internet security" versions. But as freeware antivirus applications go, AVG is packed with features like real-time protection, daily updates, and complete system scans at regularly scheduled intervals.
Update: As several readers have pointed out in the comments, when you install AVG Free 8, you will likely find a bunch of advanced features like linkscanning and email protection. The AVG web site has a comparison chart showing that these features are included in the commercial version but not the free version. It's not clear if Grisoft is including free trials of these functions or if the chart is wrong.

Personally used this for one day and changed right back to AVG 7.5, found 7.5 to be better in that it didn't eat so much memory, but i do like the new features in AVG 8, altho im tempted to go back to Avast!

There are instructions on the AVG Free 8.0 website on how to "How to install AVG without LinkScanner" and "How to install or uninstall AVG components?" which should address complaints about how to deactivate Link Scanner without the notification area icon displaying an error.

how do I down load for my free AVG 8.0 virus proctor.
I just love AVG free it is so easy to use for a 75 year old.

I;ve upgraded but find it hoggs nearly all my system resources and fails to open the interface. I'm constantly having to kill it from the task manager.

Totally agree Harley. I have just submitted a support ticket because AVG's blasted resident shield brings the system to a crawl when activated. If I disable it the system works normally again but Windows security centre reports I have no anti-virus protection, which I expect is not entirely true because email scanning still works. What's worrying is that I have no web related virus protection.
I paid plenty for the Pro Internet Security version so am loathe to dump it but if they can't resolve this matter quickly I think I will go to either Avast or NOD32.

Why am I not seeing a confirmation note that the email has been scanned nor the small window that lets you know it is in process as email comes in.
I use the latest version of Thunderbird and it used to indicate this not long ago.
I just upgraded AVG to 8.0 and see no evidence of it either though it says it's all fully functional.

I'm afraid you can't stick with version 7.5. AVG say they will not issue updates to 7.5 after 31 May 2008, so you must go to 8.0 (free or paid-for) or otherwise use another product.

I purchased a new lap-top and the dealer recommended and installed Free AVG 7.5. That was a month ago. I then got the message that I would have to upgrade to Free 8.0. That is when the problems started. My HP printer quit printing from any web page. The dealer told me to uninstall 8.0 and reinstall it. Same problem. He then Suggested I uninstall both 8.0 & 7.5 and try again. That time 8.0 would not install after the download Plus some of 7.5 did not uninstall and I have not been able to clear my computer of what remains of 7.5 and I apparently do not have a virus protecter working at all. Will I be able to install another companies virus protecter over the top of 7.5 or will I have problems? Help Please. On the plus side my HP printer is working fine again.

AVG anti virsus is really beneficial to safe guard the PC. It has several feature. Most of the people are using it free of cost.

I have installed AVG FREE 8.0 twice. Both times when it tries to go look for updates, it just stops. i never finds anything and never changes the spyware and anti virus symbol to current versions. Any ideas? 7.5?

I have the same problem; install of 8.o went fine; any and all update attempts fail.
The message for the fix < try this... > is meaningless!
yes I can go to the website and connect
