Get full version of FairUse Wizard DVD ripper for free
FairUse Wizard has been one of our favorite DVD archiving applications for a long time. The application makes ripping DVDs almost as easy as ripping CDs. You just pop in a disc, decide where to save it, and FairUse Wizard will do all the heavy lifting, ripping and compressing your video using the DiVX, XViD, or H.264 codecs.
FairUse typically comes in two varieties. There's a free version that limits your target file size to 700MB. Long videos will look pretty good, but not as good as they could at that file size. Or you can shell out a few bucks for the full version which has no file size limits.
But for a limited time, the full version of FairUse Wizard 2.8 is available as a free download. The latest version of FairUse Wizard includes a handful of bug fixes and a few new features including pre-defined encoding profiles for iPhone, iPod Touch, Apple TV, Xbox 360, PS3, and other devices. FairUse Wizard 2.8 also adds the ability to auto-detect multiple episodes on DVDs with television shows.

By the way, the free full version contains an adware "toolbar". Author claims the toolbar is an optional addin during setup and nothing will get installed if the checkbox is properly set. The adware allows the full version to be free.

I have a question and I hope somebody will answer me; I downloaded the free full version and installed it and each time I want to encode something it says access denied; now I thought this is probably due to the fact that I didn't install the adware toolbar, so I tried it a second time, this time installing the crawler toolbar, but the same problem arises; now I'm thinking this is not the full version, but I cannot find the option to pay for fair use, because all it says is limited time offer: get full version free; I also am wondering, do I have to have Xvid or DivX to run this program because I want to play dvds using quicktime player; and for further information, I have been trying to encode the dvd into ipod video format but access is still denied; and this occurs even for xbox 360 format or zune or any other option available; somebody help me please?

The toolbar installation checkbox is after you install FairUse Wizard.

Anyone know if this is better than DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn?
MarkMar 15th 2008 5:45AM
IMGburn is not a DVD ripper.
PeterMar 15th 2008 3:53PM
Mark - Not primarily, but ImgBurn will rip discs. It will NOT break any encryption, so you can't use it on discs with CSS and/or Macrovision.

This sounds like it does the same as HandBrake: http://handbrake.fr/
HandBrake is free and open source.
Does anyone if this program is better than HandBrake?
Big JohnMar 15th 2008 3:55PM
This rips and decrypts protected DVDs, as well. HandBrake spazzes on protected discs.
Personally, I'm sticking to DVD Decrypter (Windows) + HandBrake (OS X) for my DVD archiving needs. I'm in the middle (roughly) of archiving my 600 DVDs and this combo works wonders. FairUse Wizard doesn't really allow for the detailed options that HandBrake does. Quick and dirty rips would be just fine though, I suppose.

@Ben: Does this: "The toolbar installation checkbox is after you install FairUse Wizard." mean the installation of the "adware toolbar" can be avoided?
Thanks!

Yes...after install of FairUse, you are asked if you wish to install the toolbar. Just say no: FairUse is in, toolbar is out.

I've used autogk ( http://www.autogk.me.uk/ ) for years and have been really happy with it. Yet these alternatives seem just as useful.

@nero - So you don't see the great big huge blue button that says "Download" on the fair use web page? Change browsers I guess.

http://www.fairusewizard.com/ is returning a 509 Bandwidth Limit Exceeded. Guess it was popular. Thanks for the pointer the open source HandBrake. I'll give it a try instead.

Mirror?

http://www.videohelp.com/tools/FairUse_Wizard
There is a mirror offered on that site. It reports it as being version 2.8 however I don't know if it is the full version. How can I find out? It doesn't appear to have any restrictions.
HalOfBorgMar 17th 2008 8:27AM
I just DLd it (from the mirror), and used it to convert one episode from a DVD to a 850 meg file - so it must be the full version.
Free is limited to 700 meg.

I've been using FUW for a few years to rip DVDs into AVI files that I can watch on whatever-handheld-PDA-I'm-using-at-the-time. Works great with TCPMP on both WinMob & PalmOS platforms. Full movies at about 200MB per file.
Easy to use and lots of good options.

If your using windows vista , right click on the program and click 'run as administrator'. to make this do it everytime, right click and go to properties, then compatibility, and 'run as administrator'
