NewsFire RSS reader goes free
Despite having a great product, it's probably a good thing that David Watanabe is now releasing NewsFire for free. Last year, we reported on the woes of the product registration system for Newsfire -- customers could activate the software with just an e-mail address, and they had some unfriendly communication with the developer when he thought they were using it on too many machines. Now that NewsFire is free, Watanabe can keep his product competitive with NetNewsWire without having to deal with the registration issue.
If you need a full-featured RSS reader, but you don't like the looks of NetNewsWire, you should definitely give NewsFire a shot. The price is right!

I don't really see the point in NewsFire anymore. For me, it's just not as useful as NetNewsWire. And now that NNW is free, I see no reason why to stray from it. Even if the competition is now also free. As for looks and appearances, I don't think anything's wrong with how NNW looks. Of course it's always a matter of taste. It's good to have choices, I suppose. But I'll stick with NetNewsWire for now.

Why use NetNewsWire OR NewsFire anymore when you can just use google reader?

ASFx - Because there are some things a desktop client does better than the web-based ones.

I agree with andrew, as soon as netnewswire became free, i can't imagine using NewsWire. I think it's more to do with the double pane (outlook style). The GUI is nice, but why have a "mouseover" highlight- It is strange for a desktop app.

After the last communication I had with the author of Newsfire I can safely say that free isn't even a price that would make me want to use Newsfire again.
And what a cruel joke for the poor saps out there who purchased his "lifetime upgrades" license, when a newer version was never made available between the time when he made that upgrade purchasable and when the software became free.
