Tell your noisy CD/DVD drive to shut up with Nero DriveSpeed
Tired of listening to your CD or DVD drive sputter away like a small tornado while you're watching a video or accessing files? While you might want your optical disc to spin as quickly as possible when you're playing a video game, the truth is sometimes slower is better. Or at least easier on the ears. Nero DriveSpeed lets you take control of your optical disc drive. You can either choose between fast or silent, which will automatically choose your drive's fastest or slowest speeds. Or you can manually select a drive speed.
The Windows utility is free, and hangs out in your system tray when minimized, so you can always add a bit more oomph to your disc drive when you need it.

Doesn't just telling it to shut up manually work?

@CUBSWILLWIN: not unless you smack it as well. That used to work for me, but I haven't been able to find a suitable replacement trick for my laptop. I suppose this program will have to do.

Just wish it would also have the opportunity to set a default max write speed. I always burn my DVD's at 4 speed, but have to set that speed manually everytime I burn a DVD.
Next to this, this should be able to set at a much lower level, like the firmware of the drive, or the bios of your PC. Now you need to have an extra application running.

Now if only MS could get this going on the 360...
