I'd recommend checking out PSPad as well. With it's built in FTP functionality, you can edit files on your host's site as if they were local. That's a tough piece of functionality to beat. It's also free.

Notepad++ is still the best in my book. Has plugins available that cover all kinds of goodies, including FTP functionality mentioned above. Anyone who says it is not the absolute best is a total moron and is not to be believed. Seriously, though, it's pretty nice...

I agree, Notepad++ is great. I also like the find and replace function of NoteTab.

Notepad++ is awesome. Does TotalEdit have any features that NP++ does not?
One wish I have for HTML editing: an editor that can format the HTML like this Firefox add-on:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/655
That would be wonderful!

According to this blog http://www.optimalworks.net/blog/2008/software/totaledit-review TotalEdit 4.1 is not quite ready to replace Notepad++. The author also details why.

This is the best thing I have ever seen! http://www.spymac.com/details/?2347210

I second UltraEdit, nothing else matches it for the volume and quality of features. Unfortunately it's quite pricey now at $50.
Of the free alternatives I'd definitely go for Notepad++.

SPEdit is the best text editor ever made.
Textpad is what I use because I can't afford a $300 copy of SPEdit.

I'll plug UltraEdit as well. Yes, it's fifty bucks, but if you compare that to most programmers' hourly rates, it doesn't take long to pay for it.
Plus -- it gives you a recursive search-and-replace in files -- worth its weight in gold. And regular expressions. And sorting. And a great file-compare utility.
Well worth trying the demo ... and well worth paying for after 30 days. :)
